and Progress (CalMAPP), the new
statewide student assessment system is
now the California Assessment of Student
Performance and Progress (CAASPP).
• Announcement of this change was made
to local educational agencies in a January
7 letter from Superintendent Torlakson.

• Spring 2014 Smarter Balanced Field Test
• California Standards Test, California Modified
Assessment, and California Alternate
Performance Assessment (CAPA) for
Science in grades 5, 8, and 10
• CAPA for English-language arts (ELA) and
math in grades 2 through 11

• EAP in grade 11
– Voluntary for students, as it has been in
previous years
– All grade 11 students, including those
participating in the Smarter Balanced Field
Test, must have the option to participate in
the EAP
– Results for individual students only; no
school-, district-, or state-level results
• Standards-based Tests in Spanish
– Voluntary for LEAs to administer

• Will take place March 18–June 6, 2014
• Each school has been assigned a six-week
window within this time frame and can conduct
testing anytime within that assigned window.
• School test window assignments available at
http://www.startest.org/FT-windows2014.html.
• No paper-and-pencil version will be available.
• No results will be reported, but students should be
encouraged to do their best.

• 5% of students will take Field Test items from
one content area (i.e., ELA or math) and 95% of
students will take Field Test items from both
content areas.
• Participation expectations:
– Grades 3–8: All students are expected to
participate.
– Grades 9 and 10: Only students selected for the
scientific sample are expected to participate.
– Grade 11: Students selected for the scientific
sample are expected to participate; all others are
encouraged to participate.

The only students exempt from participating
in the Smarter Balanced Field Test are:
• Students who participate in the CAPA
• For the ELA test only, English learners who
have been attending school in the United
States for less than 12 months

2014 Field Test
• Describe three types of student support:
1. Universal tools, available to all
students. Examples include spell-check,
highlighter, embedded ruler,
strikethrough, and English dictionary. 8

2. Designated supports, available to
identified students, including English
learners, struggling readers, and
students with attention deficits.
Examples include color-contrast text,
the blocking of distracting content, and
stacked translations.

3. Accommodations, available to students
with an individualized education program
or a 504 plan that specifies the need for
such an accommodation. Examples of
accommodations include closed
captioning, braille, calculator, and scribe.
