Nehr-e-Khyam nala 125 ft wide being covered into a box drain on one side15 feet wide & 18
feet deep Remaining land is being reclaimed for Plotting.
Branch drain 50 ft wide
joins Nehr-e-Khyam.

Rich encroach over the nalas/drains,while the poor give space for the development of these.

Orangi town Islam nagar nala: Residents undertake
voluntary dismantling of portions of their houses to
give space for the development of nalas in Orangi.
City govt. is developing these main disposals as box
drains.

Nalas /drain of Karachi - Besides desilting the issues in flow
Piling - negligent dumping of earth at the openings
Korangi Road. Manzoor colony nala crosses here, then
passes thru DHA reclaimed land (near Qayyumabad),
and falls into the sea. Takes water from 70% Jamshed
Town also from Nursery & Airport road. Piling
for road construction, blocks the culvert openings
restricting flow.
Wide drain reduced to piped connection: Branch drain starting from Karachi cantt station (6 feet wide)
becomes 50 ft wide when passing below Aga Khan Jamaat Khana. Then thru Boat Basin the branch
joins Nehr-e-Khyam. These 2 pipes, 36” dia shown in photos above, mostly filled up with debris are
the connections of the branch drain to Nehr-e-Khyam.

natural nalas/drains
• 80% of natural nalas
have been developed as
box drains. These
provide disposal for the
sewage and rain water.
• While lane and
secondary sewers
already exist in 86% of
the town, laid by the
people and government
agencies.
KARACHI RAINS AND DRAINAGE
Issues and Solutions
1.
Drainage out falls are blocked: Falling prey to the lust for land, causing
flooding and blocking of drains and sewers.
1.1 Foremost is the “Mai Kolachi Bypass”: It has already blocked the
passage of two main city drains (the Soldier Bazaar and City Railway,
serving Saddar and the City’s Business Centre.) Flooding these areas
with each rainfall.
Solution: The Bypass needs to be converted into a bridge on
pillars: To provide free flow drainage thus safeguarding
1) the city centre from flooding
2) the mangroves from destruction – ensuring the natural protection from storms.
1.2 Other Three drainage outfalls: The Malir nadi, Manzoor Colony
drain and Lyari nadi, reclaimation and blocking in progress.
Solution: First two instances need to be stopped. Lyari nadi case
related to the LEW needs to be assessed and concern redressed, as
the reduced nadi width and the limitations of dredging (related to the
sea level) is the concern.
2. The main city drains are encroached upon: Mainly by the commercial
enterprises, the corporate sector, govt. agencies, houses/complexes of
the rich.
Solution: These encroachments need to be removed
3. Water mains are laid across most city nalas/drains: Spanning all
over the city resulting in severe contamination of water.
Solution: Shifting or Siphoning of these mains is needed.
4. Other service lines (of gas, electricity and telephone) too are laid
across most nalas/drains: like water mains they hinder flow.
Solution: Shifting or siphoning of these is needed.
5. Piped culverts: At the junction of roads with nalas and drains block
flow.
Solution: Box culverts are needed for free flow.
