Energy Technology Data Exchange ETDE/ETDEWEB Update 36th Consultative INIS Liaison Officers Meeting Vienna, Austria 4-5 October 2012 Ms. Debbie Cutler Operating Agent Representative, Energy Technology Data Exchange (DOE Office of Scientific and Technical Information) Briefly, about ETDE ETDE is a collaboration among countries, like INIS. It is under the International Energy Agency framework. Just as the main product for INIS is its INISDB, ETDE has the ETDE World Energy Base, or ETDEWEB. Members contribute to the database, and share costs. ETDE scope is much broader than INIS; ETDE and INIS cooperate to benefit members who participate in both. Thus, ETDE and INIS cooperate on many of the authorities and try to have similar input preparation guidance; JTC meetings discuss common issues and we benefit from each others’ experiences. ETDE is governed by an Executive Committee and managed by an Operating Agent, located in Oak Ridge, TN USA Brief History/Major Milestones 1974-1986 Bilateral agreements between countries to exchange information 1987 Multilateral agreement formed under IEA IA framework 1999 ETDEWEB debuted with opening ceremony at the IEA in Paris with ~ 600,000 records (Today, over 4.7 million) 2004 Opened free access to developing countries; also available onsite at IEA and at the IAEA 2006-present Enhancements: Federated Search, alerts, DOI links and OpenURL, domain recognition, search narrowing by subject, citation translation, widget, popular topics, and Google presence Current Developing Country Access Afghanistan Albania Angola Armenia Azerbaijan Bangladesh Belize Benin Bhutan Bolivia Burkina Faso Burundi Cambodia Cameroon Cape Verde Central African Republic Chad Comoros Congo Congo, The Democratic Republic of Cote d'Ivoire Djibouti Ecuador Egypt El Salvador Eritrea Ethiopia Gambia Georgia Ghana Guatemala Guinea Guinea-Bissau Guyana Haiti Honduras Indonesia Iraq Jordan Kenya Kiribati Kyrgyzstan Lao People's Democratic Republic Lesotho Liberia Madagascar Malawi Maldives Mali Marshall Islands Mauritania Micronesia, Federated States of Moldova, Republic of Mongolia Morocco Mozambique Myanmar Nepal Nicaragua Niger Nigeria Pakistan Palestinian Territories (West Bank/ Gaza) Papua New Guinea Paraguay Philippines Rwanda Samoa Sao Tome and Principe Senegal Sierra Leone Solomon Islands Somalia Sri Lanka Swaziland Tajikistan Tanzania, United Republic of Thailand Timor-Leste Togo Tonga Tunisia Turkmenistan Uganda Ukraine Uzbekistan Vanuatu Vietnam Yemen Zambia Zimbabwe Tallies from ETDEWEB in Select Areas Topic Nuclear Energy-related (mostly from INIS) Fossil Energy Renewable Energy Areas (see separate table) Environmental Aspects (land, water, air) Energy Planning, Policy and Economic Aspects Energy Efficiency, Conservation, Consumption and Use Buildings Research Fuel Cells and Energy Storage/Conversion Advanced Propulsion/Transportation Power Distribution/Transmission Carbon Capture and Storage Records >1 million 565,611 517,646 449,719 237,756 236,183 122,060 82,532 80,975 57,147 5,014 Renewable Energies Topic Solar or Photovoltaic Energy Biomass, Bioenergy, Biofuels Hydrogen-based Energy Wind Power Geothermal Hydropower Synthetic Fuels Tidal and Wave Power Records 195,684 87,747 86,255 50,189 36,429 30,602 27,081 3,659 517,646 ETDE World Energy Base Highlights Since Last ILO New Look/redesigned websites Federated search module now automatically runs in easy search mode Popular topics added; mobile access added Efforts made to cover World Energy Congress papers, IEA reports Current contents: over 4.7 million citations, 459,000 full text, well over 1 million DOIs and other links Initial page when entering the ETDEWEB World Energy Base Translate search results Quickly modify an easy search Search Refinement Aid See the full document # of ETDEWEB records found (1st 25 shown) Bonus search items from external sites Diversity of Researchers: France, Germany, Sweden, Pakistan ETDE’s Future Currently streamlining processing flow at the Operating Agent Will be looking at open access resources to see if harvesting of some sites may reduce member input preparation costs Looking forward to further cooperation with INIS Encourage additional countries to join ETDE and be part of its future Next ExCo meeting is May or June 2013 in Norway Contact Information Debbie Cutler IEA Energy Technology Data Exchange Operating Agent Representative DOE Office of Scientific and Technical Information Email: [email protected] Telephone: +1-865-576-1272 ETDE Executive Committee ETDE Chairman: Brian Hitson, U.S.: [email protected], Vice-Chairs: Hillebrand Verkroost, The Netherlands: [email protected], Silke Rehme, Germany: [email protected] http://www.etde.org/etdeweb
