1-5 Equations
Goals:
• Solve equations with one variable
• Solve equations with two variables.
Vocabulary
• Open Sentence – a math statement that
contains algebraic expressions and symbols.
• Equation – two expressions connected by an
equal sign.
• Solution– any number that makes a true
statement when it replaces the variable in an
equation.
Vocabulary
• Replacement set – the set of values to be
substituted into an expression.
• Solution set – the set of all solutions to an
equation.
Find the solution set for 4a + 7 = 23 if the
replacement set is {2, 3, 4, 5, 6}.
Replace a in 4a + 7 = 23 with each value in the replacement set.

Answer:
The solution set is {4}.
Examples
Find the solution set of each equation if the
replacement set is y:{2,3,4,5,6}
1. 3y + 6 = 21
5
1. 2y + 5 = 17
6
Find the solution set for 6c – 5 = 7 if the
replacement set is {0, 1, 2, 3, 4}.
A.
{0}
B.
{2}
C.
{1}
D.
{4}
Examples
Use the order of operations to solve the equation.
1. 6 + (52 – 5) ÷ 2 = p
16
2. 3 + 4(23 – 2) = b

3. t = 92 ÷ (5 – 2)

Equations with Two Variables
Make a table of values for each equation if the
replacement set is {0, 2, 4, 6, 8}
1. y = 3x + 12
2. y = -5x + 7
3. y =

Word Problem
Debbie pays $16 per month for a gym
membership. In addition, she pays $2 per
Zumba class. Write and solve an equation
to find the total amount Debbie spent this
month if she took 12 Zumba classes.
• y = 2x + 16
• $40
An online catalog’s price for a jacket is $42.00.
The company also charges $9.25 for shipping
per order. Write and solve an equation to find
the total cost of an order for 6 jackets.
A.
c = 42 + 9.25; $51.25
B. c = 9.25j + 42; $97.50
C. c = (42 – 9.25)j; $196.50
D. c = 42j + 9.25; $261.25
