Welcome to EBSCO’s tutorial on Searchasaurus, EBSCO’s full text database for elementary school research
and reading. This tutorial demonstrates how to search by keyword or topic, and how to use the Dictionary and
Encyclopedia. Also included is an overview of Teacher Resources, such as Publication searching.
KEYWORD SEARCHING: Begin by entering search terms in the Find field. Check the box next to the
Full Text option to get results that include the entire article, and then click on the Search button.
A RESULT LIST of all the articles that contain your terms appears. Click on any title in the Result List
to read the article. You can sort by the most current article, or by Relevance, using the drop-down list
on the right.
TOPIC SEARCHING is available when you click on a dinosaur or topic link from the home page. For
example, if you click on the first dinosaur, which represents the Animals topic, you will see a new
screen with subtopics of Animals. To view articles about any subtopic, click on the subtopic link.
Click on the DICTIONARY button to see an alphabetized list of words along the left side of the screen. You
can use the arrows to browse through the terms. You can also enter terms in the Look Up field and then
click on the orange Dictionary button to see the definition. To look for articles that contain your terms, click
the Search for your word in Searchasaurus link next to the Dictionary button.
Explore the ENCYLOPEDIA by clicking on the Encyclopedia button, and then entering terms in the
Look Up field. Click on the Search button to find more information about your terms.
PICTURES are available if you click on the Pictures button, enter terms in the Look Up field, and then
click on Search.
Click on any thumbnail image in the Result List to enlarge it.
Click on the TEACHER RESOURCES link to see available databases to search. They are listed under the
Find field.
To SEARCH WITHIN A PUBLICATION, click on the Title Lists link.
Click on the Title List link under a database description to see an alphabetized list of publications
represented in the database.
In the Browse for field, enter a publication name to see if it is available in the database. Click on the
resulting publication name link to go to the Publication Detail page for that title.
The Publication Detail page offers a list of available issues, and a link to use if you want to search within
the publication for cover-to-cover content, regardless of search terms.
