RUNII: General
RUN II start date pushed back to March ‘01
RFP for RUN II Offline analysis systems final
SGI won the bid for both CDF and D0
This purchase acquired first round of offline
analysis resources for both CDF and D0
On the order of 5000 Specint95 per experiment
Machines are installed and in integration state
Both collider experiments will hold a Mock
data challenge in the next two months
RUN II: Mass Storage
EMASS Robots installed
Various support groups are being trained to
operate the robot
Still no decision on tape drives
Contenders: SONY AIT II, Exabyte Mammoth II, Quantum
Super DLT
RUN II: Farms
RFP process for phase I of the RUN II farms took up
most of summer
Of 5 bidders only 3 ended up as contenders for the split win
Eternal Graphics (50) and Hi Tech USA (100) were winners
Systems arrived 9/20 and are going through acceptance tests
right now
– Tests include SETI to exercise CPU, bonnie to exercise disk and
a third test to exercise network
IO servers for these systems not yet in place
This work will be done in December/January
SECURITY
Continuing issues with computer security
FERMI Strong Authentication
Exploits occurring regularly
Methods of automating patch installs and keeping up to date
being investigated
User education a key component but difficult to implement
Use of kerberos to secure passwords
Preliminary deployment occuring now
For details see report given yesterday
Continued deployment of ssh and other security
enhancing tools (tcpwrappers, tripwire)
