IS YOUR DEPARTMENT
GHS COMPLIANT?
A GUIDE TO UAF’S MSDSonline SDS
MANAGEMENT SYSTEM AND OSHA
COMPLIANT LABELING
Environmental, Health, Safety and Risk Management (EHSRM) August 2015
OVERVIEW
• Occupational Safety and Health Administration
(OSHA) Hazard Communication Standard 29 CFR
1910.1200 – “Right to Know” went into effect in
November 1985. Often referred to as “Hazcom.”
• OSHA has revised the Hazard Communication
Standard to be more in line with global systems.
The new Globally Harmonized System (GHS)
standardizes safety data sheets (SDS) and uses
pictograms that can be understood regardless of a
person’s native language.
2
OVERVIEW (cont.)
• The purpose of Hazcom is to ensure that
information concerning hazards associated with the
workplace is transmitted to employees.
• You, as an employee, have a Right to Know about
the hazards in your work area and the potential
effects of these hazards upon your health and
safety.
3
OVERVIEW (cont.)
• This document assumes that you have taken the
Hazardous Communication (GHS) training. If you
have not taken the training and quiz (required of
ALL UAF employees), go here or
(http://www.uaf.edu/safety/training/haz-com/)
and take the training most suited to your job
before continuing.
4
OVERVIEW (cont.)
• The following tutorial will help you
1. Get the most current SDS for each chemical or
product by using MSDSonline
2. Print a label for chemicals that have been
transferred to a secondary container.
Note: Unlabeled containers may result in penalties
levied by OSHA during an inspection.
5
OBTAINING A CURRENT SDS
• Every lab or facility that uses hazardous chemicals
or products is required to have a current SDS.
– This can include printer toners, dry erase cleaners,
cleaning chemicals and sprays if used in durations
and quantities greater than normal consumer use.
• Often, a current SDS will be supplied with the
chemical or product order. However, if not, there
are several ways to obtain a current SDS via the UA
system.
6
OBTAINING A CURRENT SDS USING
MSDSonline
• UAF has contracted with MSDSonline to manage our
Safety Data Sheets.
• EHSRM is currently in the process of entering
chemicals and products into the MSDSonline
eBinder.
– The eBinder is an electronic folder that will
eventually contain a current SDS for every chemical
or product used at UAF.
• It is the responsibility of MSDSonline to ensure
that, once the chemical or product is in our
eBinder the most current SDS is available.
7
OBTAINING A CURRENT SDS USING
MSDSonline (cont.)
• There are two ways to utilize the MSDSonline
program:
1. By Using your UA username and password. The link
is at the bottom of the EHSRM Home Page go here
to the login page.
2. Through your EHS Assistant online chemical
inventory program. Go to Slide #19.
8
MSDSonline ACCESS VIA UA
USERNAME AND PASSWORD
• Your new page will look like this:
Simply click on the blue Log in link

MSDSonline
• The quickest way to find the exact match SDS for your
product or chemical is to type in the catalog or product
number in the main search box circled in red below.
12
MSDSonline (cont.)
• You can also search by other identifiers as mentioned in
the search box. For example, many offices and labs
use bleach. Simply type in Clorox bleach or even just
bleach and then click on the box to the right of the
main search box (in red circle) with the magnifying
symbol.
13
MSDSonline (cont.)
• The result will look like this. In the red circle, the first line
says we do not have Clorox bleach in our eBinder. The
second line indicates that there are over 500 matches for
Clorox bleach in the MSDSonline program. Click on the
second line.
14
MSDSonline (cont.)
• A list with all Clorox bleach products will appear. Simply
scroll down the list until you find the product that matches
yours. Click on the pdf symbol next to the product name.
15

• You can now
download
and/or print
your SDS
16
MSDSonline (cont.)
• If the SDS is in the EHSRM eBinder, your result page
will look like this:
17

• You will notice that the first column has more options
for your product or chemical:
1. PDF link
2. Product Summary
3. Attached files
4. eBinder information

MSDSonline ACCESS VIA EHS
ASSISTANT CHEMICAL INVENTORY
• All laboratories must use the online chemical
inventory program EHS Assistant:
• If you already have an inventory with EHS Assistant
there are several ways to access MSDSonline.
19
MSDSonline ACCESS VIA EHS ASSISTANT
CHEMICAL INVENTORY (cont.)
• Simply log on and choose “MSDS Online” from the
main CHEM menu and follow the same instructions
starting in slide #11 above. OR... (next slide)

MSDSonline: PRINTING LABELS
• Once an SDS is in the EHSRM eBinder, you will have the
capability of printing a variety of OSHA compliant
labels.
• This is particularly important if you transfer a chemical
from it’s original container to a secondary container.
– Exception: If the chemical is to be used immediately and
the container will be completely empty after use, it does
not have to be labeled.
• Remember, fines can be levied by OSHA if unlabeled
hazardous chemicals are discovered during an
inspection.
26
MSDSonline: PRINTING LABELS
(cont.)
• The first step to printing a label is to make sure
that:
1. The product or chemical is in the eBinder (refer to
slides 17&18)and if so,
2. All the necessary information from the SDS is
loaded into the eBinder. To do this, click on the
Product Summary link in the first column
27
MSDSonline: PRINTING LABELS
(cont.)
• If your product or chemical is NOT in the eBinder or
there is no information in the Product Summary,
you must contact the Division of Hazardous
Materials at 474-5617 or [email protected]
• EHS will enter the information and let you know
when you may proceed with printing your label.
