Self directed support
- is fundamentally about a shift of
power
- requires cultural change
- is a significant change
- takes into account people’s real
wealth
Self directed support:
- ‘the system through which disabled
people can get the life and support
they want. It is an active process
rather than something people are
given’.
‘I direct my own support……’
‘ Self-directed support (SDS) allows people
to choose how their support is provided to
them by giving them as much control over
the individual budget spent on their
support. In other words, SDS is the
support a person purchases or arranges to
meet agreed health and social care
outcomes’
A direct payment:
‘A cash payment someone can get and
manage instead of having the services or
support arranged or provided by Social
Work’
More about self directed support. It’s about:
-
people having choice and control
exercising rights and taking responsibility
getting the life and support you want
an active rather than a passive process
people achieving the outcomes they want

prosper?
Implications for Providers
• Things wont stay the same -change will happen
at a different pace in different places; the future
is unwritten
• Needs increased organisational flexibility and
agility
• There are new opportunities….direct
relationships, new partnerships, new services
• and threats….less organisational control, doing
more with less
The jigsaw of change
Some interesting quotes:
• It’s about getting a life not just a service’
• ‘My plan is working very well and I am
enjoying the flexibility of it and being able
to decide when and what I want’
• ‘Being in receipt of In Control money has
given us a life again’
• ‘your only limit is your imagination’
