A PPARC sponsored event
The prizes ………………………..
 Substantial
financial
help to take a
school party to visit
CERN (3 prizes of
£650 & 3 prizes of
£350)
A PPARC sponsored event
But also a great opportunity to…

Make links with a leading Particle Physics
research group
 Enhance your own Particle Physics
knowledge
 Make links with teachers and students in
other schools
A PPARC sponsored event
The Birmingham group are involved
with the ALICE experiment…

Which, in 2008, will
investigate lead ion
collisions at energies
around 30x greater than
those presently
achieved at
Brookhaven, extending
our knowledge of the
conditions shortly after
the BIG BANG…….
A PPARC sponsored event
And the ATLAS experiment ………

Which will
investigate protonproton collisions at
energies of 14
million MeV, looking
for the Higgs Boson
– a key to
understanding mass
A PPARC sponsored event
The LHC at CERN has been under
construction since 2000…..

Progress as at June
20th 2005…….
A PPARC sponsored event
And the whole complex is worth a
school visit……..
A PPARC sponsored event
There’s lots to see and opportunities to
relax too……….
A PPARC sponsored event
The city is well worth a visit….
A PPARC sponsored event
What is involved?

Tonight, some of our undergraduate students are going
to give some short presentations on particle physics and
the experiments at the LHC
A PPARC sponsored event
Then……..




You will go back to school/college and
work on your own displays/presentations
to give to other, younger students in your
own school and/or other schools……
to cascade information on these exciting
new experiments to as many others as
possible ….
hopefully enhancing your own knowledge
& communication skills ….
as well as inspiring a few people on the
way!
A PPARC sponsored event
Expectations……….





We hope you will have an
audience of at least 50
The basic presentation should
be on powerpoint and…
involve at least two students
from the competing school, but
could involve more…
and should last around 20-25
minutes.
You are free to use drama,
demonstrations, audience
participation etc and to be as
innovative as you like!
A PPARC sponsored event
Support…………

Academic staff from the
Particle Physics Group at
Birmingham are here to
answer your questions
tonight…and in the next
few months!
 The student presenters are
happy to help too!
A PPARC sponsored event
Judging Criteria……..

The presentation should
– Be aimed at the level of the audience invited
– Cover the relevant points
– Be as interesting/entertaining as you can make it!
A PPARC sponsored event
More Judging criteria……..

The presenters should
– Show evidence they
have done their
homework!
– Exude enthusiasm for
the subject!
A PPARC sponsored event
What next?

Go back to school and discuss
– Who is going to be involved in the
preparation
– Who are your intended audience
– When you are going to hold your
event (sometime December 2006 March 2007)
A PPARC sponsored event
Then………….

Prepare your presentation
 Organise and deliver the event
 Send to us - BEFORE MARCH 16th 2007 –
- A CD with a copy of your powerpoint presentation
and any appropriate digital photographs of the event
(audience pictures/demonstrations/presenters in
action etc), clearly labelled with both school and
presenters names
- A completed details form to include descriptions of
any demonstrations used, any audience interaction
etc, as well as numbers and ages of those present at
the event etc.

HAVE FUN!
A PPARC sponsored event
THE FINALISTS WILL BE
ANNOUNCED………….
 By
March 30th 2007

The BEST 6 TEAMS, as judged by a panel of
academic staff, teachers and students at the
University, will be invited to take part in the finals to
determine who gets the major & minor prizes on…..
