vocational skills as arts
including paintings, wall
decorations, garlands of
artificial flowers, etc.
• The girls are not only selfreliant, they are taught
Karate for self-defense.
• The age group is 3-18
Brief History
• Prasanna Jyothi Trust had submitted a proposal for
a project to support destitue/orphaned girls in
Bangalore in Spring, 1994 at Asha Berkeley
• Support from Berkeley between 1994-96 – two
pictures created by PJ kids was on calendar.
• Break in funding between 96-2000
• Shanmuga visited PJ and new proposal was
submitted.
• Seattle supported between 2001-03
• Asha Austin was born as a satellite in 2002 and this
project was taken over from seattle and funded for
the first time in 2003.

Social Context
• Urban Setting
• Parents from low income groups – daily labourers,
vendors .
• Parents are divorcees or widowed. There are
orphans too.
• Kids leaving PJ
• Will to succeed and be independent.
Achievements
• The alumni are testimony to PJ's role.
• This year Sharada graduated with 71% in her final
year computer science diploma. She left PJ to be
on her own. She wanted to take care of her 70 year
old grandmother who was living on her own.
• Vidhya rani finished her training as a nursery
school teacher. She got a job and also joined the
Davar's college specialising in Secretarial practice.
• Every Kid in Prasanna jyothi was promoted to the
next grade/class. Many of them won awards/prizes
in competitions and sports in school.
• All kids put up a splendid dance-drama
performance.
Challenges
• Two girls dropped out of school.
• Constant 'pull outs' from PJ.
• Assistance in tuition and after-school coaching.
Updates
• Check project page for specific info on marks/grade
etc.
• A few kids are brilliant in studies and we need to
determine scholarship opportunities for them.
• The kids had been on a trip to Coorg.
• They had performed a dance drama for a function
at PJ.
Site Visit
• Rajiv Muralidhar from Asha bangalore visited the
project for us. (June 25-26)
• Positive feedback
• Healthy and hygenic
• Very friendly kids
• Proficient in more than 2 languages
• Rajiv and his sister plan on visiting PJ regularly to
help with tuition. He also offered to 'SAC' :)

Funding scene
• Funds till Sep 05 sent.
• 4 kids left. 5 kids joined. One donor dropped out
b'cos the child she sponsored graduated.
• If the existing donors agree to continue, we will
have to find 2 more donors (We have one
committed donor already)
• The current strength is 18 children.
• Prepare ourselves to send $2160 by Aug/Sep for
Oct'05-April'06.
• $1080 already submitted by a few donors for next
phase.
