LICENSURE
A professional license is essential for your employment with Arlington Public Schools. As
a newly hired and current APS employee in a licensed position, you must either apply for
licensure or send a copy of your current Virginia professional license to the HR
Department.
If you are a(n)

Occupational Therapist, Physical Therapist Virginia Department of Health Professions (VDOH) Apply directly with the VDOH. You must be licensed by the
first day of school.
Speech Language Pathologist
Virginia Board of Audiology & Speech-Language
Pathology (BASLP) - Apply directly with the BASLP. You
must be licensed by the first day of school.
Teacher, Library Media Specialist, Math
Coach, Reading Specialist, School
Counselor, School Psychologist, School
Social Worker, Administrator
Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) - Apply through
the APS Human Resources Department.

LICENSURE DUE DATES
SEPTEMBER 8:
Licenses issued by the VDOH and BASLP are due to the
HR Department. (Modified calendar employees: August 4)
OCTOBER 24:
Licensure documents required by the VDOE are due to the
HR Department. (Modified calendar employees: October 4)
FEBRUARY 1 (for VDOE licenses only):
• Virginia’s Praxis II passing score is due if your license/endorsement requires it.
• Technology Standards for Instructional Personnel (TSIP) must be
completed. Work with your school’s Instructional Technology
Coordinator (ITC) and inquire about your TSIP portfolio.
Please note: If required items are not received by the due date, your contract will be null and void
and you may be placed on substitute pay status.

3 ways to qualify for tuition assistance for licensed staff

License Renewal: APS reimburses 6-credit hours in a 5-year renewal cycle. APS pays
up to $1,002 for a 3-credit course.
License Deficiencies: APS reimburses coursework required by the Virginia Board
under their license and/or evaluation.
Professional Development: APS offers $650 every five years for coursework to
enhance career goals.
What’s the process to apply for a refund?
Complete the Scholarship Application located on APSNet. Send it to HR to set aside your
funds. Take the course. Then, within 60 days of completing the course, send HR the
transcript with your receipt confirming your payment to the college/university. APS offers
tuition assistance for coursework only. Textbook fees are not covered. Assistance may be
determined by the availability of funds.

Health and Dental Benefits
• Employees have 31 days from their first day of
employment to enroll in benefits.
• Health insurance is effective the first of the month
following 30 days of employment.
• Dental insurance is effective the first of the month
following 30 days of employment.
• ID cards are mailed to employees by the plan providers.
• Premiums are paid one month in advance of coverage and
may be adjusted if enrollment forms are submitted late.

Flexible Spending Accounts

Healthcare Account – out-of-pocket eligible health-related expenses

Dependent Care Account – eligible childcare expenses

Transportation Account – qualified commuting and parking expenses
• Employees must enroll within 31 days of employment for healthcare
and dependent care accounts. Employees can enroll at any time for
the transportation account.
• Employees set aside pre-tax dollars through payroll deduction for
reimbursement for out-of-pocket expenses for health, dental,
prescription, and vision services, childcare for children under age 13,
and commuting expenses which include bus, train, and metro costs
and commuter parking.
Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA)
• Healthcare FSA contribution limits are a minimum of $100 to a
maximum of $2,550 per calendar year (January through December).
Employees may cover expenses for all eligible family members. Use
or lose account.
• Dependent Care FSA contribution limits are a minimum of $500 to a
maximum of $5,000 per calendar year (January through December).
Childcare is covered for children up to age 13. Use or lose account.
• Transportation FSA contribution limits are a maximum of $130 per
month for commuter transportation/transit pass expenses, and a
maximum of $250 per month for qualified parking expenses.
• Must re-enroll during Open Enrollment for the Healthcare and
Dependent Care FSA accounts for the NEXT calendar year.
CURRENT ENROLLMENT IS ONLY FROM
OCTOBER – DECEMBER.
Optional Supplemental 403(b) and 457(b) Retirement Program
and School Board Cash Match Plan
• APS offers a variety of voluntary plans to help you achieve your retirement
goals. Available plans include a 403(b), ROTH 403(b), 457(b) and ROTH
457(b). For 2015, employees may contribute up to $18,000.
• Additional catch-up contributions are available for employees age 50+ and
catch-up contributions are available for employees with 15+ years of
employment with APS.
• If you are eligible, the APS School Board matches .4% of your base salary
or $10 per pay for 24-pay employees ($12 per pay for 20-pay employees),
whichever is greater, to a 401(a) account with TIAA-CREF. NOTE: VRS
Hybrid Plan members MUST also contribute the voluntary 4% maximum to
their Defined Contribution Plan to qualify for the match.
