The most detailed Ordnance Survey dataset
is MasterMap. This is large scale (1:1 2
1:10 000 depending on area), comprehensiv
depicting an extensive range of both mannatural features. It can be used to depi

Historic Digimap gives access to old
Ordnance Survey maps of Great
Britain. Maps available date
between 1843-1996 and up to four
maps of the same area showing the
situation at different times can be
compared on screen. Maps can be
downloaded as georeferenced tiffs
for inclusion in a GIS, or printed
out as they are:

How do I use Digimap?
When you first log in, you will be
given a choice of
•Map and Data Collections
•Find and Share
•or Tools/Developer’s Area
Digimap
Maps and Data Collections includes
the Ordnance Survey Collection
(current, contemporary Ordnance
Survey maps and map data) and
Historic Digimap.
Geology and Marine Digimap are not
yet available to the University
of Reading.

If you choose Ordnance Survey data,
you will be
given a choice of different services
available, with a
short description. These include
Roam and Carto,
both of which give access to the
printed products
described above.
You can still choose Historic
Digimap by clicking on the Digimap

Digimap
Roam is the easiest version to use; it
allows you to create, view and print a
simple map at twelve fixed scales.
To create a simple map click on the
Roam icon. You will be taken to a map
of Britain, with a Task menu on the
left which allows you to search,
control the map content and print.

There are two ways to select the
location you want to map:
•Zoom into the map using the mouse wheel or
the sliding scale bar on the right hand side.
•Enter a place name, post code or grid
reference in the search option in the Task
menu and click Find.

•To re-centre your map, click and drag
on the map
•To zoom in, use the mouse wheel or the
sliding bar at the top right.

In some of the pre-set views you can choose
to include or exclude any of the different
features included in that view. To do this,
go to Map content in the Task menu.
Set or clear the check box beside each
feature in order to include or exclude that
feature in your map. The map will update
automatically.

To print your map, go to Print in the Task
menu. The map will be a pdf, and you can
choose A4 or A3, landscape or portrait
format.

Carto is more versatile and
consequently more difficult to use,
but allows maps to be customised to
suit the user’s needs.
