On a cool summers day with a slight breeze.
We arrive at the boat ramp at Whangamata
all set for a days fishing. The seagulls
squawking and the sound of constant moving
water, we jump out and start unwinching our
4foot dinghy and jump in. Andrew pull starts
the 15hp Mercury motor. I chuck in a few
fishing rods and bait and we are ready to go.
Dad parks the ute and runs over and hops in.
Andrew turns the dinghy around and gives
the engine a gun.

Andrew always likes to drive and dad doesn’t
like it when he drives fast. Andrew is taller than
dad but dad is heavier. Andrew likes to go
fishing but he’s not very good. I get inpatient
when I haven’t caught anything for 5 minutes.
We get out into the ocean and start looking for
a good fishing spot. Dad said to put on our life
jackets.

We stick on our life jackets and pick up the
fishing rods. Dad cuts up the bait and sticks in
on our hooks. I unreel the fishing line and start
my wait. Andrew picks up his line and gives it
an almighty throw. After waiting about 15
minutes with only a few nibbles we decide to
change places. ‘where should we go now?’
Andrew asks dad. Dad explained that there’s a
good spot by the rocks over there where you can
catch lots of kingfish. He told us to be careful we
could get stuck on the rocks. Or we could head
to another spot a bit further by that island.

We arrive and fling out our fishing rods. After
about 2 minutes I get a real big tug. I give my
rod a few yanks and get into a rhythm wind
yank wind yank. As the fish comes to the surface
dad yells out to me, ‘you got a big tarikiki.’ Dad
grabs the net and we fished it out of the water.
While dad takes the hook out I bait my line and
chuck my line out. Andrews jealous because I got
the first fish for the day. Dad yells out to me ‘
she’s a beauty 50cm!’ Andrew catches another
one and I catch 2 more but they weren’t as big
as my first one.
