Container Management in the Port of Antwerp

 PSA HesseNoord Natie  Part of PSA group, a leading global port operator with home base in Singapore, and an extensive global network of port projects in several countries across China, Europe, India, Korea and SE Asia and Japan  HesseNoord Natie is one of the major container gateways to Europe, operating terminals in the ports of Antwerp, Zeebrugge and Rotterdam.

 Processing several million containers in Antwerp per year (7MTEU in 2007 in Antwerp and Zeebrugge)  in a 365/24/7 operation April 25, 2020 6

Improving efficiency and safety in container yard operations at HesseNoord Natie

 Container yard = giant open-air warehouse and trans shipment location   Giant cranes for loading/unloading ships; Fleet of mobile cranes (straddle carriers and other) for moving containers around and onto trains/trucks

The problem : keeping track of all containers during moves with straddle carriers

Improving efficiency and safety in container yard operations at HesseNoord Natie

 The problem : keeping track of all containers during moves with straddle carriers  even though operation is organized using sophisticated planning and wharehousing computer system, human error remains important problem Even 0.1% error rate would result in several 1000s of containers “lost” (i.e. whose recorded position differs from real position)  Current solution is manual check  possible

Improving efficiency and safety in container yard operations at HesseNoord Natie

   Automatic logging of pick-up and drop-off points for containers to mitigate human error Linked to central yard-management SW : Using EGNOS (European satellite augmentation for accuracy improvement) for accuracies better than ½ container width (standard size 20ft container ≈ 6m x 2.5m x 2.3m)

Original implementation in Deurganck terminal with 44 straddle carriers resulted in 0 “lost” containers; now rolled out on other terminals for >200 straddle carriers
