Lucas 11:1 - 4
1 Un día, Jesús estaba orando y
cuando terminó, uno de sus discípulos le
dijo: “Señor, enséñanos a orar, como
Juan enseñó a sus discípulos”.
2 Entonces Jesús les dijo: “Cuando oren,
digan: ‘Padre, santificado sea tu nombre,
venga tu Reino,
3 danos hoy nuestro pan de cada día
4 y perdona nuestras ofensas, puesto
que también nosotros perdonamos a
todo aquel que nos ofende, y no nos
dejes caer en tentación’ ”.

1 He was praying in a certain place, and
when he had finished, one of his
disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to
pray just as John taught his disciples.”
2 He said to them, “When you pray, say:
Father, hallowed be your name, your
kingdom come.
3 Give us each day our daily bread
4 and forgive us our sins for we
ourselves forgive everyone in debt to us,
and do not subject us to the final test.”

We know that Jesus prayed always.
And he always prayed in a special
manner before making important
decisions. He would come out from
among the people to be alone with
his heavenly Father.
Sabemos que Jesús oraba todo
el tiempo. Y siempre de
manera especial antes de hacer
decisiones importantes. Salía
de entre la gente para estar a
solas con su Padre celestial.
He would go to the mountains, or
set out with the Apostles on a
boat, or go to beautiful places
such as the Garden of Olives.
Then there was the special time
when he was transfigured as he
prayed, on the Mountain of the
Transfiguration. His face and his
vestments were trans-figured;
they became white as snow.
Se iba a las montañas, o con los
apóstoles se apartaban de la gente
en una barca, o se iban a lugares
como el Jardín de Olivos. De
cualquier manera cuando fue a
orar al Monte de la transfiguración,
se transfiguró su semblanza y su
vestidura; se pusieron blancas
como la nieve.
The gospel for today tells us that
when he finished praying at a
certain place, the Apostles
wanted to learn from him.
“Lord, teach us how to pray.”
Jesus proceeded to teach them
the Our Father as it is found in
St. Luke.
El evangelio de hoy nos dice que
cuando estaba Jesús orando en
cierto lugar, al terminar, los
apóstoles querían aprender de Él.
“Señor, enséñanos a rezar.”
Jesús procedió a enseñarles el
Padre Nuestro de San Lucas.
The Our Father in St. Luke’s gospel
has five petitions:
1. Father, hallowed be thy Name.
2. Thy kingdom come.
3. Give us this day our daily bread.
4.
Forgive us our sins (debts),
as we forgive those who are
indebted to us.
5.
And lead us not into temptation.
El Padre Nuestro de San Lucas
tiene cinco peticiones:
1. Padre, santificado sea tu Nombre.
2. Venga a nos tu reino.
3. Danos hoy nuestro pan de cada día
4. Perdónanos nuestros pecados
(deudas), como perdonamos a
nuestros deudores.
5. Y no nos dejes ceder en la prueba
When Jesus uses the word
“Father” remember that in Hebrew
the word is “Abba.” In this way
Jesus introduced a new way of
speaking to God. He repeats it in
the prayer at the Garden of Olives,
before dying (Mark 14:30).
Cuando Jesús usa la palabra
“Padre” hay que recordar que en
hebreo es “Abba”.
Jesús así
introduce un nuevo modo de
hablar con Dios. Lo repite en la
oración en el huerto de los
Olivos, antes de morir (Marcos
14:30).
The Fathers of the early Church
Chrysostom, Theodore of Mosuestia,
and Teodoret of Cyprus were from
Antioch. The language spoken there
was Aramaic, the same language
Jesus spoke. They had nurses that
spoke Aramaic. They all say that
“Abba” is the word a child uses with
his father. “Imma” is the word used
for “Mama” or mother. These were
the first words of a child.
Los Padres de la Iglesia de los primero
siglos Crisóstomo, Teodoro de
Mopsuestia, y Teodoret de Cyprus
eran de Antioquia, donde se hablaba
la lengua que Jesús hablo: Arameo.
Tenían nodrizas que hablaban Arameo.
Unánimemente dicen que “Abba” es
la palabra que usa un niño con su
Padre. “Imma” es la palabra que se
usa para la “mama” o madre. Eran
las primeras palabras de un niño.
In the times of Jesus, this was
the way to speak. Adults also
used these endearing words with
their little children. These words
were used every day. They were
household words, that is, words
used among family members.
En los tiempos de Jesús, esto era
la manera de hablar. Los adultos
también usaban estas palabras de
cariño con sus hijitos. Eran
palabras que se usaban todos los
días. Eran palabras caseras, es
decir, palabras que se usaban
entre familia.
By contrast, no Jew ever spoke to
God in that manner. Whereas Jesus
did it all the time when he prayed.
The only exception is in Mark 15:74
“My God, my God, why have you
forsaken me.” Jesus was citing
Psalm 22:1. When he was not citing
scripture, Jesus spoke with God like
a little child speaks with his Father:
simply, intimately, and confidently.
Por contraste, ningún judío hablaba
con Dios de esta manera. Pero Jesús
lo hacia todo el tiempo en sus
oraciones. Una sola excepción se
encuentra en Marcos 15:74: “Dios mío,
Dios mío, porque me has abandonado”
Jesús estaba citando el Salmo 22:1.
Cuando no estaba citando la escritura,

Matthew 11:25-27 is where Jesus
says: “I bless thee, Father, Lord of
heaven and earth, for you have
hidden these things from the wise and
the understanding, and revealed it to
the little, ones; yes, Father, for such
was thy gracious will. All things have
been delivered to me by my Father;
and no one knows the Father except
the Son, and any one to whom the Son
chooses to reveal him.”
Mateo 11:25 –27 es donde Jesús dice:
“Bendito seas, Padre, Señor de cielo
y tierra, porque, has escondido estas
cosas a los sabios y entendidos, pero
se las has revelado a la gente
sencilla”; Sí, Padre, bendito seas,
por haberte parecido eso bien. Mi
Padre me ha enseñado todo; al Hijo lo
conoce sólo el Padre, y el Padre lo
conoce sólo el Hijo, y aquel a quien el
Hijo se lo quiera revelar.”
This ultimately expresses the mystery
of his mission. Also it expressed his
authority. God the Father has
conceded the fullness of knowledge
to Jesus as Son by predilection.
Jesus authorized his disciples to
repeat “Abba” when speaking to God,
just s he had done. He made them
heirs in being children of God. And
he gave them power, as disciples, to
speak to God, confiding in Him like
little children.
Así expresa ultimadamente el
misterio de su misión. También
expresa su autoridad. Dios Padre le
ha concedido pleno conocimiento al
Hijo cómo predilecto. Jesús autorizó
a sus discípulos repetir “Abba” al
hablar con Dios, así como Él lo hizo.
Les concedió ser herederos en ser
hijos. Y les concedió poder, como
discípulos, a hablar con Dios de tal
manera confiando en Dios como
niños.
Besides, we have Matthew 18:3
says: “I assure you, that unless
you become like little children, you
will not enter into the kingdom of
God.” St. Paul in Romans 8:14-16
says: “all who are led by the Spirit
of God are sons of God. For you did
not receive the spirit of slavery to
fall back into fear, but you have
received his spirit of sonship.
Además tenemos a Mateo 18:3
dice: “Yo les aseguro, que si nó se
hacen como niños, no entrarán al
reino de Dios.” San Pablo en
Romanos 8:14-17 dice que “todos
los que se dejan llevar por el
Espiritu de Dios son hijos de Dios.
No recibistes un espiritu que los
haga esclavos y vuelvas a el
temor; has recibido un Espiritu que
los hace hijos y que nos permite
gritar: ¡Abba! ¡Padre!
When we cry “Abba! Father!”
it is the Spirit himself bearing
witness with our spirit that we are
children of God, and if children,
then heirs, heirs of God and
fellow heirs with Christ, provided
we suffer with him in order to be
glorified with him.”
Ese mismo Espiritu le asegura a
nuestro espiritu que somos hijos de
Dios; ahora, si somos hijos,
somos tambien herederos;
herederos de Dios coherederos con
el Mesias;
y el compartir sus
sufrimientos es senal de que
compartiremos tambien su gloria.”
