• Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE)

VCE Requirements
• Students must satisfactorily complete a
minimum of 16 Units that must include:
▫ 3 Units of English Studies, including at least
one Unit 3 and 4
▫ Three sequences of 3 & 4 studies other than
English
▫ 90% attendance at school

VCE English Requirements
• Students must satisfactorily complete 3 units
from English/ English Language/ EAL or
Literature
• Students must complete a Unit 3 & 4
sequence in an English study within one year
to be eligible for an ATAR score through
VTAC.

VCE Mathematics Requirements
• Students do not have to undertake any
Mathematics to complete VCE
• Check University and TAFE requirements for
specific Mathematics requirements

VCE Mathematics Guidelines
• Student undertaking Mathematics Methods are
required to undertake General Maths Advanced (or
Specialist Maths)
• It is strongly recommended that students achieve the
following mid year exam results and test averages for
these subjects:
▫ Maths Methods: at least 80%
▫ General Maths: at least 60%
• Entry into Specialist Maths at Year 11 will be by
recommendation only

• Students wishing to undertake Chemistry
in 2016 must have undertaken year 10

• The VCE Units and VET Programs to be
offered at Copperfield for 2016 are outlined in

Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR)
• Approx 50% of University Courses use the
ATAR to select students for their courses
• ATAR is calculated using:
▫ Units 3 & 4 English/EAL/English Language
or Literature ATAR Study Score
▫ Next best 3 Units 3 & 4 ATAR Study Scores
▫ 10% of any 5th and 6th Unit 3 & 4 ATAR

VET contribution to VCE
• Most VET programs provide 4 VCE units
• Scored Assessment VET programs: exam and
assessments provide a scaled ATAR study
score e.g. Hospitality
• Non-scored Assessment VET programs: may
be counted as 5th or 6th subject to provide a
10% increment of average 4 ATAR subject
scores e.g. Automotive Studies

VCE Scaling
At Copperfield College, we achieve when we are respectful,
responsible and value relationships
• VCAA provides each student with a Study Score
from 0 to 50
• VTAC scales the scores in each VCAA study to
reflect the strength of competition among the
students undertaking each study
• This Scaled Study Score is called the ATAR
Subject Score
• VTAC uses the ATAR Subject Scores for each
student to calculate their ATAR

Studying Units 3 & 4 in Year 11
• Year 10 students undertaking a VCE subject
this year require 70% for the mid year exam
to undertake a Unit 3 & 4 subject in that
study in Year 11
• Year 10 students seeking to undertake a Unit
3 & 4 subject in 2016 without having
completed Units 1 & 2 in 2015 require
endorsements from both the relevant 2015
Year 10 teacher and their Team Leader.

VCAL Community Projects
• Personal Development Strand (PDS) requires
students to complete Community Projects.
• In Year 11, students work on projects related to
community health-partnered with CHASE
• In Year 12, students work on complex community
projects where a product is presented to an external
partner-Western Health, Delbridge
• Must satisfactorily complete all PDS outcomes to
gain VCAL certificate.

• VCAL students must undertake a VET, VCE
students may undertake a VET
• Nationally recognised programs
• Most VET programs are delivered on Tuesdays
and Thursday at Copperfield, other Brimbank
schools and a number of TAFE locations

arrangements and are therefore only an
option for VCAL students:
▫ International Freight Forwarding
▫ Plumbing- no 3-4 contribution

• 2016 VET student fees ranged from $150$1,000- See VET Fees sheet
• Uniforms required for Automotive

Student selection process
• 3 Pathways Classes
• Individual Counselling
• Students complete Course confirmation sheets
• Student selections will be reviewed by Pathways
Staff, signed by pathways staff and returned to
students for parents signature
• Blue course confirmation sheets to be returned
signed by parent by Friday 28th August
