News & Updates
SOMC Completes Market Pay Analysis for January
One of the five elements of the SOMC Total Compensation Program is Market Pay. SOMC
completes an annual Market Pay analysis each January to compare the base rate of positions at
SOMC to health care market rates of pay across the region. This annual process also consists of
a review of pay ranges, average pay rates, and pay differentials (shift, on-call, and weekend).
Basic Life
Support Courses
SOMC Workforce
Development is
requesting that all
employees who plan to
attend the American
Heart Association
(AHA) Basic Life Support
courses register via
NetLearning. This will
allow the department
to ensure that the
appropriate participant
to educator ratio of 6:1
(as required by the AHA)
is being maintained.
If you need assistance
with the registration
process, please contact
Workforce Development
at ext. 2721 or 2712.
During the analysis, if the market rate of a specific job has increased, the pay range
assignment and the employees’ base rate will be adjusted to compensate for that
increase. Since it is SOMC’s philosophy to base our pay on relevant pay markets, not all
SOMC positions will receive an increase. If a position does not receive a market increase
during this process, it is an indication that the position is already being paid a fair and
competitive wage and is either at or above current market pay for the position.
Market movement varies from year to year and is dependent on many economic factors in the
country, region, and the healthcare job market. Based on our analysis, 190 positions will receive
a market pay increase this year, which affects 460 employees. As stated above, those who do not
receive an increase are already being compensated at the 100% of the market pay rate average.
Those employees who will be receiving a market increase will receive notification
via a letter from their leader on Jan. 22. The 2015 market increase will go into effect
for the pay period beginning 1/11/15, ending 1/24/15 and paid 1/29/2015.
If you have any questions related to this process, please call Human Resources at ext. 8597 or 8745.
2014 W-2’s Available for Employees via API, Mail
Employees who elected to receive their W-2 electronically for 2014 may now
access the form through their API Personal Tab. All other employees must
wait to receive their hard copy, which will be mailed by Jan. 12, 2015.
Employees who chose to receive an electronic W-2 can only access their legal copy via
API; employees who opted for the hard copy can view their non-official version through
API, but must wait to receive their legal copy via mail. This process cannot be changed
for 2014; however, those who would like to change this option for the future may do
so by accessing API > Personal Tab > Log in > Employee Tab > Personal Information >
check the W2 Statement under the electronic consent section > Save > Sign Out.
Employees who opted to receive the hard copy and live in Kentucky will
receive two W-2 forms for 2014; one will contain information for Portsmouth,
while the other will contain Federal and State information.
Please be aware that though these forms will be mailed at the same time, they may not arrive
in your mailbox at the same time. If you have not received your hard copy in the mail by Jan. 26,
2015, or if you have any other questions regarding the W-2 process, please call Payroll at ext. 7342.

Health & Wellness
To better meet our goals of helping employees get
healthy and stay healthy, SOMC will proudly offer a
new weight loss challenge for 2015 called ForeverFit.
Employees can choose to participate in
ForeverFit either individually or as a member
of a team (of up to five people).
The year-long challenge, which will focus on gradual,
sustainable weight loss, will begin the week of Jan.
12 and run through the end of December 2015.
To be eligible for prizes, participants are required to:
“As we continue our organizational-wide
wellness journey, we have decided to make a
conscious shift toward supporting programs that
provide sustained health and wellness effects
for our employees,” April Sanders, manager
of Employee Health and Wellness, said.
Cost of participation is
free to all employees.
Registration can be
completed beginning Jan.
12 from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30
p.m. Monday through
Friday in the Employee
Health and Wellness
Office (Suite 307A of
the Waller Building).
Offsite registration
will be completed on
a scheduled basis. For
more information,
please call ext. 8432.
Sanders explained that, though the SOMC
Employee Meltdown has been popular in
years past, the challenge places an unwanted
emphasis on rapid weight loss over a short period
of time with no plan for sustaining results. In
reality, people who lose weight gradually and
steadily (at about one to two pounds per week)
are more successful at keeping weight off.
“Year after year, we see returning participants
weigh-in for the Meltdown at their beginning
weight from the previous year, or even higher;
obviously, this is not healthy,” Sanders said.
“SOMC’s commitment to wellness is a long-term
investment, which is why we want to use ForeverFit
to promote a sustainable lifestyle change.”
•
Weigh in monthly via an Employee
Health and Wellness representative.
•
Attend a minimum of four education sessions,
which will be held once a month throughout
the year. The sessions will cover a variety of
wellness topics and participants who attend
four of the sessions will receive a free T-shirt.
•
Demonstrate gradual weight loss
over the year. (Crash diets cannot be
used at year-end to win prizes.)
Highlights of the challenge include:
•
A paid day off will be awarded to the
individual with the greatest percentage of
weight loss during the first three quarters of
the challenge (March, June, September).
•
At the end of the program, the individual
with the most weight loss and the
individual with the highest percentage
of weight loss will each receive $500.
•
A FitBit fitness tracker will be awarded to
each member of the two winning teams
with the most weight loss and to the
highest percentage of weight loss.
•
Participants will also be eligible to receive
free personal training sessions, wellness
coaching, free consults with SOMC
dieticians, and many other benefits.
