12 February 2014
It is all too familiar to read that we are living and working in a world and time of
rapid change. This is impacting on schools and the education system just as it is
in the industries and professions of you, our parents. It is therefore unsurprising
that we need a new paradigm allowing us to transition into a way of working
that responds to the complexities and challenges of the 21st Century. One of the
many areas of focus is leadership; contextually we respond to this with our
focus on student leadership. And one important way of ensuring all students are
provided with opportunities is our outdoor education program, the cadet
program and offering and supporting students undertaking the Duke of
Edinburgh scheme.
The outdoor education program got off to a fine start for 2014 with Year 7
College and Grammar students spending their first full week of secondary
schooling undertaking the rigorous requirements of Camp. Those of us who
were able to spend time with the groups, along with their Form Teacher and
OEG staff were absolutely delighted with the outcome. These students achieved
a great sense of teamwork, they challenged themselves on the abseiling and
flying fox courses, bush navigation and creative thinking and they worked on
independence; they truly became leaders and recognised the art of leadership
requires followers who believe they are really leaders. They have much of which
to be proud and I was pleased to be able to welcome the students back on
Friday with words encouraging them to feel proud of their accomplishments.
They have set the bar high for great deeds as they now move into the formal,
campus bound program that awaits. It is a time which is necessarily
contemporary, innovative and meets the ever changing needs of a diverse
cohort coming as they do from many different primary experiences. We wish
them well as they continue their journey at Pittwater House.

And now, it is the turn for Year 3 students to undertake their camp… being the
first camping experience for students, staying away from home, often for the
first time, is necessarily cause for a little anxiety from some students (and
parents). It is however, critical, if students are going to experience the all-round
education of our School. And as I have stated many times, the sequential
outdoor program is as important as the academic program, for it aids the latter
in many unforeseen ways. It is here that some of the richest learning takes
place and some of the strongest friendships are formed.
I am confident parents of Year 3 and Year 7 students will see the benefits of this
time away with its focus on resilience, teamwork and leadership and understand
why we view it with such importance.
A welcome to our new parents…
It was a delight to welcome so many of our new parents to a Drinks Party at the
end of our first week of the 2014 academic year. The Hall was a throng of
chatter and conviviality as parents found others from their year group and met
up with Network Parents and Staff. The first week is always a time of wonder
and we were all relieved and gratified to hear of the fun and friendships made
after the first few days!

Years 3-6 Swimming Carnival
The swimming season got underway this week with an excellent Years 3-6
carnival. In a full day of events all students had the opportunity to participate to
their ability whilst gaining points for their House. Particular mention must be
made of the one record for the day; Sasha Mund de Laurens in the 8 years
backstroke broke a long standing record. Many of the school records are indeed
long standing and we are now focused on providing even greater opportunities
for training and attaining PBs for some, and importantly, for all our students in
being involved.

MyHouse
Parent Logins
As per the email sent out on Monday evening, the parent logins in MyHouse are now active. As you will have seen
from the email, the passwords and usernames are different this year to previous years. This is in order to bring it in
line with other Pittwater House parent portals you will be given access to later in the year.
Parents without a personal email address (registered to themselves, not their spouse) have been issued a login but
could not be emailed the details. If you have not received your login please email [email protected] with
your full name and the email address you would like your MyHouse account registered to (this can now be an email
address you share with your spouse if you choose) and your details will be sent to you.
‘School Information’ Tab
Parents are reminded that in the ‘School Information’ tab in MyHouse there is a folder called the ‘Principals Pack’. This
has in it a lot of the key school information documents that were distributed in January. As this pack consisted of so
many great informative and useful documents, it has now been placed on MyHouse. As updates take place during the
year or other useful information documents are created, we will continue to update this folder.
Year 12 Parent Teacher Night - Monday 17 February
This event is taking place next Monday in the Great Hall after school. Please remind your child to make bookings with
all of their teachers. Mrs Murray will also be present if anyone has any Career or Tertiary entry questions.
Mr James Walmsley, Head of Teaching and Learning
FROM THE DIRECTOR OF POSITIVE EDUCATION
Wellbeing
This week I have decided to focus on a common theme in Positive Psychology: Gratitude. Gratitude means
thankfulness, counting your blessings, noticing simple pleasures, and acknowledging everything that you receive. Our
Year 7 cohort will be very thankful for the simple pleasures of home, after spending last week roughing it on their
camp in the Southern Highlands. Gratitude manages to shift your focus from what you perceive your life lacks, to the
abundance that is present. There are surprising life improvements that can stem from the practice of gratitude.
Dr Robert Emmons, who has been studying gratitude for almost ten years and is considered by many to be the
world’s leading authority on gratitude, is author of the book, “Thanks!: How the New Science of Gratitude Can Make
You Happier”. Dr Emmons’ research shows that those who practise gratitude tend to be more creative, bounce back
more quickly from adversity, have a stronger immune system, and have stronger social relationships than those who
don’t practise gratitude; practising gratitude can increase happiness levels by around 25%. He further points out that
“To say we feel grateful is not to say that everything in our lives is necessarily great. It just means we are aware of
our blessings.”
In the last edition of HouseNews, I suggested that you write down three things that ‘went well’ for you each day.
Furthering this concept, a common method of developing the practice of gratitude is to keep a gratitude journal. This
exercise basically consists of writing down every day a list of three to ten things for which you are grateful; you can
do this first thing in the morning or before going to bed at night. There are many smart phone apps available where
you can keep your thoughts ‘in the cloud’ and these apps remind you to make an entry too (“Gratitude Diary” is one I
have used but there are plenty of other apps out there). Another exercise you can try is to write a gratitude letter to a
person who has exerted a positive influence in your life but whom you have not properly thanked. A very powerful
way of continuing this is to meet the person and read them your letter, face-to-face.
The following is an excellent article from the Wall Street Journal on “Raising Children with an Attitude of Gratitude”,
http://online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB10001424052702303773704579270293660965768 , and here is a short
excerpt: Gratitude works like a muscle. Take time to recognize good fortune, and feelings of appreciation can
increase. Even more, those who are less grateful gain the most from a concerted effort. "Gratitude treatments are
most effective in those least grateful," says Eastern Washington University psychology professor Philip Watkins.
"The old adage that virtues are caught, not taught, applies here," says University of California, Davis psychology
professor Robert Emmons. Parents need to model this behaviour to build their children's gratitude muscle. "It's not
what parents want to hear, but you cannot give your kids something that you yourselves do not have," Dr Emmons
HouseNews Issue 2014 / 2
says. This may seems obvious, but it eludes many parents, Dr Watkins says. "I think the most important thing for us
adults to realize is we're not very grateful either," he says.
I received some encouraging feedback after my last article and I would like to encourage anyone coming across
interesting articles or experiences to contact me and share their experiences. I hope that the activities described
prove to make a positive difference to everyone in our community.

Work Experience 2014
Year 10 work experience will take place from 1 December to 5 December.
Students have been given information regarding the program and over the next few weeks they will hear from Year
11 students and myself about sourcing and finding suitable work experience.
Even though the dates seem very far away, many industries and organisations only book in students in these initial
weeks of the year. If students are interested in the following they must investigate options immediately: Science
(University faculties, CSIRO, Zoo); theatre, film and television production companies; magazines, newspapers and
radio.
Work Experience outside of the designated week (1-5 December) can only take place in the school holidays.
Please contact Mrs Murray for any help and guidance [email protected].
Year 12 Parent Teacher Careers Interviews
Mrs Murray will be available for a chat at the Parent / Teacher interviews on Monday 17 February in The Great Hall.
Please stop by if you have any queries or questions.

Junior School News
FROM THE HEAD OF THE JUNIOR SCHOOL
Week 3 is well upon us, and I am amazed how quickly we are churning through the days and special events. I am
sure I am not the only one feeling this way. There has been so much accomplished in such a short time: two
Swimming Carnivals and two Parent Orientation Evenings, with the one to one parent meetings well underway. If you
haven’t already, be sure to make your appointment to meet with your child’s class teacher over the next week. These
early days are crucial for the students to see the close connections being established between home and School. It
feels extremely reassuring to visit the classrooms and see that so much investment in learning is taking place, from
the ECC through to Year 6. I continue to be impressed with how happy, confident and engaged the students of the
Junior School are in every learning environment, and how well-mannered and well-presented they are trying to be.
Year 3 left today for their 3 day OEG Camp at Vision Valley and I am looking forward to catching up with the students
and teachers on Thursday evening.
Please be reminded that all absences must be explained as required by the policy governing all schools in NSW. Until
our new parent portal is active explanations should be sent to [email protected] and late changes to
student’s daily routines must be sent via email to reception at [email protected] (please only call if you
do not have access to email). Reception will see that the message gets to the teacher and Mrs Achurch. Any changes
in daily routine must be noted in the diary or emailed to the teacher.

Car Park
I would like to express my gratitude to everyone using the South Creek Road car park, whether in a parking, kiss’ n
drop or pedestrian capacity. Your patience and response to requests has been appreciated. Please be reminded travel
in the car park is 5km per hour and hand-held mobile phone usage is not allowed. Speeding and negligence places
our children’s lives at risk.
Swimming Carnival Results
What a happy celebration it was to witness our youngest Kindergarten students to our oldest Year 6 students
participating with courage and conviction for their sporting houses at our two Swimming Carnivals. At the conclusion
of the carnivals, some of our students will be asked to represent Pittwater House at the HICES carnival later in the
term.
A true reflection of the calibre of the Pittwater House student was exemplified by a selection of Year 9 students who
supported the staff and students over these days. We are enormously grateful for their help.
Co-curricular Clubs
Junior School students’ clubs and co-curricular activities will begin in earnest next week (Week 4). Advertising flyers
will be placed on MyHouse. Some new clubs will be beginning next week such as Spanish Club and Robotics. Interest
in participation will be sent home for your response.
FROM THE ECC
Nearly 3 weeks into the term and the children of the ECC are beginning to settle into some really lovely little
friendships. They are now becoming familiar with the many different faces of their educators and enjoying the wealth
of opportunity this large campus affords them. (Apart from needing a packed lunch to walk from the tennis courts
and back)! Incidentally the novelty of the ‘lunch box’ is still keeping our new 3 year olds on their toes; with so many
compartments packed with tasty morsels, it is not surprising that some are still rifling through ‘the box’ as they head
out the door of an afternoon!
In early childhood settings children develop a sense of belonging when they feel accepted, develop attachments and
trust those that care for them. As children are developing their sense of identity, they explore different aspects of it
(physical, social, emotional, spiritual, cognitive), through their play and their relationships. When children feel safe,
secure and supported they grow in confidence to explore and learn (Early Years Learning Framework, 2009 p.20).
During these first few weeks in the Ringtail Possum classroom, the children have had many opportunities to develop a
range of new and exciting social and learning relationships. The children are enjoying getting to know each other as
well as their educators and as their sense of belonging becomes evident, it appears that their individual personalities
do too!!! Mrs Platt has a suspicion that it is going to be an interesting year.
The Brushtail children are busy exploring their identity and their individuality as they work on their topic, “All about
me”. The 3 way mirror has been a fabulous resource for them to study their faces and represent what they see… and
for eye colour, graph the results. It has highlighted the fact that everyone is different and very special in their own
way.
The Bilbies are settling into their new environment very well. Each day begins with many happy and smiling faces,
eager to know what exciting things will be happening today. The children have been busy forming relationships with
each other and their teachers, and learning to be part of a group. It has been exciting to see old friendships rekindled
and new friendships forming between the children.

STUDENT SUCCESS
Congratulations to the following students:
Jessica Hutchinson (C10), won the January 2014 Handicap round Archery Competition
held at the Warringah Archers Club totalling a score of 899 points.
Mason Gordon and Harrison Fisk (G8), swam in the 2k section of the Cole Classic at
Manly Beach as part of Team Aidan. Team Aidan was established in 2011 by Harrison to
raise funds for 'The Kids Cancer Project' in response to his little brother being diagnosed
with a brain tumour. This year 20 students aged 9 to 13 swam as part of Team Aidan on
the 1k and 2k courses. They are an inspirational group and their efforts in and out of the
water are to be commended. As an added bonus the 5 boys who swam the 2k course
came first in the Charity Teams category. They look forward to the day that Aidan, having
made a full recovery, will be swimming the event alongside them.
Ryan Garner (G11), has been invited to be part of an Australian program for developing
elite snowboarders and skiers in Colorado, USA. He is currently in Colorado for the rest of
the term, where he is hard at work training and studying. Ryan keeps up with his school
work through MyHouse and has teachers and mentors as part of his program at the
training base. The photograph shows Ryan in action.
