Purpose of Presentation

Provide tips on writing a good grant application
Demonstrate the difference between good and bad
applications.
Don’t assume
•
An approach to writing a good
grant application
Prepare
• Start work early in the period the grant is open or
before!
• Have a thorough understanding of the project that you
want to do.
• Understand the issue/s that the project will address
and back this up with some form of evidence
• Make sure it addresses an issue for you and it is not
peripheral to your core business
• Read the selection criteria thoroughly and check that
the project can meet all required criteria

Aligning
• Align your project with outcomes outlined in funding
agency’s policy documents. Don’t play policy Bingo!
• Align the project with internal policy documents

Plan
• Work out the project timelines – be realistic
• Prepare a realistic budget. Don’t ask for too little or too much
• Check that all items are eligible under the grant criteria
• Look for some partners. Win/Win
• Look for supporters in your community eg groups that will benefit
and local Members of Parliament
• Source any documents that are required to be attached to the
application.

Write
• Use the official application form -don’t change this!
• Complete the form as fully as possible – contact the funding body
if you are unsure
• Make financial information as accurate as possible
• Write clearly and succinctly
• Don’t go over any word limit
• Attach all the required supporting documentation
• Don’t include documents which are not requested

Check
• Show someone else who has never seen the project or
heard you talk about it.
• After reading it – ask them to explain it to you
• Did they pick up the main points you wanted to make?
• Did they know what you were asking for?
• Repeat this step until the other person can clearly and
easily describe the project back to you.

Submit
• Submit before or on time
• Submit in accordance with the instructions
• Don’t submit in several ways eg. Email, fax and
post – unless you have contacted the recipient and
been advised to do this.
