Young Prosthodontic Educators
October 12 - 15, 2014 |
Baden-Baden, Germany
YPE workshops are provided by the IJP’s editorial group to function as an international faculty in
their efforts to encourage and develop clinical prosthodontic scholarship. This extraordinary
educational initiative seeks to underscore the international nature and commitment of the IJP’s
prosthodontic discipline. Such dedication to the highest standards of education is indorsed by
the ICP. Potential YPE participants are encouraged to consider attending this highly appreciated
effort, to nurture strong scholarly commitments to the clinical discipline
The next YPE event will be funded by the Foundation for Rehabilitation (F.O.R.), which is an
independent, international initiative that seeks to improve oral health care and support
humanitarian leadership. These unique workshops are presented by a faculty selected from the
IJP editorial team whose pro bono commitment helps develop and nurture clinical scholarship.
The 2014 Workshop follows previous meetings and was open to new participants as well as a
small number of past attendees, and limited to 36 participants who were already ICP members.
There were more registrations than space available so we would encourage you to consider
another year! For future reference:

17th ICP Biennial Meeting Santiago, Chile 2017
Santiago, formally Santiago de Chile, is the capital and largest city of Chile. Chile's steady
economic growth has transformed Santiago into Latin America's most modern metropolitan area,
with extensive suburban development, dozens of shopping centers, and impressive high-rise
architecture. It has a modern transportation infrastructure.
On a clear day, Santiago basks in one of the most spectacular settings of any city in the world. A
glance through the downtown blocks reveals a mighty circle of mountains - the snowcapped Andean
peaks to the east, and a smaller coastal range to the west. There's a large range of activities within
easy reach of the urban sprawl. Trekking, climbing, horseback riding, skiing, kayaking and wine
tours are just a few of the exhilarating possibilities at Santiago's doorstep

Presidents’ Letter
Since the very first conference of the ICP in 1985, the meetings have grown in stature and in the quality of
their content. The meeting in Torino, Italy last year was no exception, and had the largest number of
participants to date. We expect the next meeting, in 2015 in Seoul, Korea, to be larger still. We are
pleased to acknowledge the work of the scientific committee of the Torino conference, ably lead by Martin
Gross and Franco Bassi, but they would be the first to admit that this was a great team effort from all
concerned.
And talking of team effort, the team of our predecessors, Yoshinobu Maeda and Martin Gross was
exemplary in leading the Board of Councilors, and we accept the challenges of building on that. We would
like to acknowledge another team, without whom most of what we do would not be possible, and that is
our Administrators and Meeting Planners, RES-Inc., ably led by Eben Yancey. Drs Keiichi Sasaki and
Anne Wennerberg served the Board with distinction and were unable to continue due to their work commitments, and so we welcomed to
the Board after the Constituent meeting new members David Bartlett (UK), Sri Koka (now based in the USA) Ami Smidt (Israel) and
Hirofumi Yatani (Japan).
There are several matters and activities that we would like to report on here, and we will keep members updated on these in the ICP
newsletters. As always, we would welcome any and all suggestions for improving our organization and of course, our main activity, which
is our biennial conferences.
The ICP really is the world body for the specialty of Prosthodontics, with a membership spanning more than 70 different countries.
Interestingly, though, whilst our membership has steadily increased over the years, it still fluctuates between conference years and nonconference years. A pleasing trend of late, though, has been the increase in the numbers of organizational members, and whilst they do
not pay any dues, they are asked to encourage their members to join. The Board will communicate more regularly with the organizational
members to encourage that, and to learn of any activities that can be publicized in our newsletters and linked in the website. This will
increase the global reach of the organization and shrink distances and differences.
At the Torino meeting, we introduced an innovation of a variety of poster awards, some reserved for the local Prosthodontic organization,
and an increased number to reward the many poster presenters. The judging of these posters is a difficult task, but current co-VicePresident Brian Fitzpatrick (as Chair of our Education and Research Committee) and his teams did a sterling job, and this year we can
honestly say that every single poster was judged and scrutinized, more so when we were able to speak with the presenters (this is a hint
for next year’s presenters). We would welcome any feedback on this process and whether members felt this was successful and
rewarding for them, as we intend to do the same in Seoul.
The Board has agreed to continue to provide financial support for participants to the Young Prosthodontic Educators workshops, and
continues to work and support the YPE organizing committee under the Chairmanship of its founder and initiator, George Zarb. The
Board is discussing ways of encouraging more participation by the YPE participants in the ICP conferences, to encourage them to make
oral and poster presentations. Already they have their own social network and their own gathering at the conferences and this bodes well
for the future of our specialty.
As a kind of adjunct to that, the initiative of the Discussion Groups- (http://www.icp-org.com/ICPMembership/Discussion.aspx) has been a
great success, but as with all such sites, really does need ongoing input. We would encourage all members, and especially our student
members, to join these discussions and ask those awkward questions you always wanted to ask and challenge those dogmas you may
not fully believe!
There are several initiatives in the pipeline that the Board and its committees are considering, about which you may want to comment
and again, please send us those comments at any time. We will be discussing the possibilities of establishing a bursary fund for budding
Prosthodontists from developing countries, a research fund to which members could apply for, for example, top-up funding, and some
means of supporting the treatment of patients who desperately require advanced Prosthodontic intervention, but which neither they nor
their country’s health system can afford. Many of these initiatives require that somewhat scarce commodity these days: money! But
wouldn’t it be wonderful if our membership grew and our surpluses grew and our donations grew to the extent that we could do all of
these?
So we would love to hear from you, and open any and all lines of communication. One of the best ways to do this is via the website, and
we encourage you to visit this often. We would also encourage you (as many of you have) to volunteer to be part of any of the
committees (all of whom have the power to co-opt) and working groups. We will continue to update you on all of our activities through
these newsletters as well as the website.
