The Making of a Logo
The Big Picture
Graphic Design shapes how we see the world, influences
what we do, and encourages us to buy into products and
ideas.
Logos help to identify a person, company, or place to
promote instant recognition.
Logo Design Elements
There are 5 important design elements of every logo. They include;
1. Simple (easy recognition)
2. Memorable
3. Timeless (will be effective in 10, 20, 50 years…)
4. Versatile (work at any size, any color, on any medium, Vector format)
5. Relevant/Appropriate to the person, industry or organization in question.
Logo Types
Wordmark logo - mainly uses text
and typeface to create its message,
though other elements might be
included
Lettermark logo – similar to a
wordmark but consists of initials or
abbreviations
Logo Types
Brandmark logo – a graphic symbol
usually simple but powerful, that comes
to represent the company in an abstract
way
A combination mark logo – (also
called an iconic logotype) combines a
wordmark with a brandmark,
communicating both a company’s
identity and its purpose
Timeless Logos
Changing Logos
The “best” logos are made to stand the test of time (“unchanged”) however as
trends change, logos do as well.
Unique Logos
Invoking Emotion
Some Logos have hidden meanings
which can invoke emotions or make
us think or feel a certain way.
Chase for example has a hidden meaning
behind the octagon. The open area
surrounded by the blue octagon invokes a
feeling of security, which for a bank, is a
good thing.
Hidden Meanings
Choosing a Logo Type
Wordmark Logo Design
Your name is reasonably distinctive but not (yet) a
household word.
 Communication funds are limited and should be
focused on name recognition.
You want to associate products with the parent
company or person more clearly and directly than a
symbol permits.
Choosing a Logo Type
Lettermark Logo Design
 Your initials translate graphically better than your
actual name.
 You need to link subsidiaries to the parent
company and can't easily use the name.
 You can afford to teach the public what the
lettermark means.
Choosing a Logo Type
Brandmark Logo Design
 You need an emblem on a product.
 Your name is too long, too generic, doesn't translate
well globally, or has no personality.
 You need to link subsidiaries to the parent and can't
easily use the name.
 You can afford to teach the public what the symbol
means.
Choosing a Logo Type
Combination Mark Logo Design
 You are a start-up enterprise or small business with
limited funds.
 Your name is reasonably distinctive but not (yet) a
household word.
 You need an emblem on a product, but want more than
just a symbol.
 Iconic logos are the most cost effective type of logo
design available and are ideal for start-ups, small
businesses , or people.
Design Time
Design a powerful, eye-catching logo for yourself. It should look good on paper, a
website, a t-shirt, anything. It must be easy to read at small sizes and work well
without colour.
Your task is to design a logo that projects who you are. When someone sees it,
what is the first thing you want them to think? Make it striking and as original as
possible using words or shapes important to you. Perhaps a hobby or just your
initials with a symbol.
You should have 4 “Final” logo ideas which must be in black and white (we will add
colour later). Check the Design brief for full requirements (its in the mobile handout folder on the website.
