Respond to this prompt – write at least 2/3 of a page.
The state of Michigan prohibits the start of K-12 schools from
starting before Labor Day. The main reason behind it was
for tourism – to promote it through the Labor Day Holiday.
Many states around us like Ohio and Indiana and some
further away like Texas and Florida start school in midAugust. Their position is starting after Labor Day was based
on an agricultural society, which we are not any longer,
and getting out earlier, the end of May or early in June
allows students to access jobs and family’s to have more of
the month of June since sports start up in August even is
schools do not.
Do you believe our legislature did the best thing for our
state in making it mandatory to start after Labor Day or do
you believe starting earlier would make more sense for our
state? Explain and Defend your answer.
