Course Standards
Course Outline of Record shall include the expected
number of contact hours for the course as a whole
Establishes improvement over current common
practice of listing hours per week
Ensures consistency among different course offering
patterns (regular semester, compressed calendar,
short-term/intersession classes)
Generally 48-54 hours for a standard three-unit lecture
course

§55002.5 Credit Hour
Basic unit of college credit is defined to avoid reference
to specific term lengths (previously described in terms of
hours/week over a 16 week term):
48 hours (minimum) of lecture, study, lab work = 1 unit
credit
1-unit Lecture Course = 16 hours in-class lecture + 32
hours out-of-class study
1-unit Laboratory Course = 48 hours in-class laboratory

96 hours (minimum) of lecture, study, lab work = 2 units

Credit shall be adjusted proportionately to lecture,

By July 1, 2009, establish a policy on “W” in credit
courses—not to exceed 4 times (can be more
restrictive locally)
After authorized number of “W”s, student must receive
a grade or a different nonevaluative symbol
Apportionment for “W”s already limited by §58161
Exemption to “W” policy—withdrawal due to fighting
wildfires, evacuation, or loss due to wildfires

a student to petition to have a noncredit course

SACC subcommittee established to develop
