What is reading comprehension?
The children have a usually have a weekly reading
comprehension lesson which checks their
understanding of what they are reading.
We also carry out guided reading in smaller
groups which centre around drawing out
particular elements of the text. These sessions
will be led by either a teacher and/or a teaching
assistant.

Usually your child will be heard once a week by a teacher/TA.
Children are expected to change their book independently once
they have finished their previous book.
Please help us at home by:
Listening to your child read frequently (preferably daily) and
commenting in their reading record.
Asking questions about the text to check understanding
Making sure that they have their reading book and record in
school everyday.

Most writing will be centered around the current
topic.
Children will learn to write for a variety of
purposes including stories, plays, poems, letters,
instructions and reports.
There will also be a specifically taught weekly
grammar and punctuation lesson on a Monday.
Throughout the year we will be doing lots of work
on planning, developing, improving ideas and
proofreading work to find their own mistakes.

3D words, magazine words etc.
Look at the Spelling Handbook
for some great ideas.

Children will have their targets for each subject
stuck in the front of their books. These are in
child friendly language which encourages the
children to understand their own next steps.
Children are also aware of what the intended
learning outcome is for each lesson.
Targets are differentiated and suited to the
child’s own pace and progress. Children have
individual needs and are at varying places in their
learning and development. Learning is not a race!
Targets
Shoodle is the school’s learning platform.
All homework and spellings will usually be
placed on here weekly.
 Information about targets and activities to
support the children’s learning will also be
available on the class page.
 This presentation will also be available on the
class page.
 Class will also start to use Google Apps for
Shoodle.
