Quinceanera & Sweet 16
Quinceaneras are similar to
our sweet 16 parties. They
are both pretty big events
in their own ways. A
Quinceanera signifies that a
girl is growing up and has a
lot of tradition and
ceremonies attached to it.
The sweet 16 is the same in
a few ways. It is mainly for
girls and is usually
celebrated by a bigger
Central America, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Cuba,
and other Spanish speaking countries
celebrate the Quinceanera.
There is normally a large cake made either by
the family or a bakery. It tends to be quite
elaborate. Picadillo, arroz con leche, and pan

served.

The exact date that the
Quinceanera began is
unknown but what is known is
that the traditions have been
linked to the ancient Aztec
rites of passage. The Aztecs
believed that at around age
15, young girls could prepare
for marriage and learn their
household duties. After a
time, religious factors have
played into the celebration.

The Quinceanera is a defining moment in the
lives of many hispanic girls. This celebration
has been a time for families to gather and
celebrate. Nowadays, though, this
celebration isn't thought about in the same
traditional aspects as it began with. Some
people use this time to go on trips or to get
a new car, while others still hold the grand
celebration. Even with the change of
modern times, this is still a very momentous
event.
The quinceanera usually begins with a
Thanksgiving Mass. Afterwards, is the
reception and banquet where the girl will
have her last pinata. The girl will then
participate in "The First Waltz" with her
father. There is also usually a toast and
presentation of the gifts, including "The Last
Doll" which is the last doll the girl will
receive. The party then continues with
dancing and eating.
