Experiential Learning:
Why?
Students remember 10% of what
they read once and 90% of what
they do!
Experiential Learning is
defined by CCU as:
•
•
The process whereby learning occurs
through reflection on doing and
knowledge as a result of guided,
purposeful experiences
Or….. try it/do it/ experience it/ reflect
upon it
Statement of Purpose
We want all of you to know:
•
•
•
What experiential learning is:
1. Knowledge demonstrated. Appling
knowledge through your intellectual
pursuits. (Intent)
2. Preparedness: set your
goals/activities/objectives. Know what you
want to learn from each experience.
3. Authenticity: means performing
in a real world context and
experiencing decisions that are made
in actual positions within an
organization and even making some of
those decisions.
4. Training for the experience:
What training do you need to be
effective in an experiential
environment? What skills and
abilities do you have? What skills
and abilities do you want to develop?
5.
Monitoring and continuous
improvement:
Feedback: get comfortable with it. Constructive
criticism is crucial to develop new skills and abilities.
It can be difficult at first.
“ When you are screwing up and nobody says
anything to you anymore, that means they’ve given up
on you.” Randy Pausch
Be open to improvement! It is not a compliment when
people have given up on you.
6. Assessment &
Evaluation:
Be open to others’ assessment of yourself.
Consider constructive feedback; reject
criticism that does not accurately depict the
situation. Find four people you truly respect
and value those opinions.
Engage in self-assessment.
College is all about learning about yourself,
as well as material in the disciplines.

personalized E.L. plan?
What you need to do:
•
•
•
•
•
Define your major/ minor/cognate
Not sure yet? That is okay.
What causes could you be interested in?
What problem would you like to use your
abilities and skills to help solve?
Close your eyes. . . picture yourself six
years from now. What do you see?
Consider your reflection: will
you look behind or ahead?
Your Plan:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
I will…..
Talk to career services…
Go to internship fairs or pursue other opportunities
for internships….
Get an on-campus job…..
Talk to professors about research opportunities….
Consider presenting at conferences…..
Get involved with undergraduate research…..
Is yours but there is an
equation:
Success = hard work +
