Foundation Level Course
What is QuarkXPress?
This courseware teaches the fundamentals of QuarkXPress 4.1. It is a page layout
application. You can use QuarkXPress to create complex multi page documents
such as Text Books, Magazines and Novels, or single page documents such as a
personal letter or a simple business card.

you to customize your
copy of QuarkXPress.

allows you to
customize the
default setting for
your document.

Tools Palette
The Tools Palette is
used to create and
edit many elements
in your QuarkXPress
document, including
text boxes, picture
boxes, lines, text
paths, text, and
imported pictures.
Document Layout Palette
The Document Layout Palette lets you add, delete, move, and
access document pages and master pages using page icons.

Measurements Palette
The Measurements Palette is used as another way to
make change to fonts, columns, width, height, angle,
and even the location of objects in your document.
Document Window
The default Document window contains the New
Document page, the Tools palette, the Document
Layout palette, and a blank Measurements palette.
New Documents
The Document command
displays the New
Document dialog box,
which lets you specify the
setup of a New Document.
Saving Documents
The Save command lets
you retain changes
made to the active
document.
Opening Documents
The Open command
displays the Open dialog
box, which lets you open
an existing document.
Usage Dialog Box
The Usage Dialog Box will
help you fix the problem If
QuarkXPress has given
you a warning about
missing fonts or pictures.
Document Setup
The Document Setup
dialog box will allow you
to change the size or
orientation of your
document.
Master Pages
• Master Pages serve
as the basis for
document-page
formatting.
• You create master
pages using the
Document Layout
palette.
Closing Documents
• The Close command
lets you close the active
document.
• If a document contains
unsaved changes, a
Save warning displays
and lets you save
changes.
Item Tool
• The Item Tool is
one of the most
used tools in
QuarkXPress.
• It’s used to select
and manipulate
objects.
Content Tool
• Another heavily
used tool in
QuarkXPress.
• It’s used to input
text, import text and
pictures.
• It can also be used
to resize objects.
Rotation Tool
Used to Rotate Text
Boxes, Picture
Boxes and lines.
Zoom Tool
Used to Enlarge
and Reduce the
document view.
Text Box Tools
• Used to Create
Text boxes.
• You have a choice
of seven box types
to choose from.
• The Rectangle is
the most
commonly used
type of Text box.
Picture Box Tools
• Used to Create Picture
boxes.
• You have a choice of
six box types to choose
from.
• The Rectangle Picture
Box is the most
commonly used type of
picture box.
Line Tools
• Used to Create lines.
• There are four line tools
to choose from.
• The lines can be drawn
at any angle and can be
no longer than the size
of the paste board.
Modifying Tools
• The Document
Preferences Tool
tab allows you to
customize the
default setting for
your tools.
Modifying Dialog Box
• The Modify dialog box
allows you to make
comprehensive
specifications to text
boxes, picture boxes,
lines, and text paths.
Modifying Boxes
• The Box tab allows
you to specify the
position of an object
box.
• You can also specify
the size, angle and
even the color of the
box.
Modifying Lines
• The controls in the Line
tab let you specify style,
width, position,
arrowheads, color, and
shade for active lines.
Modifying Groups
• The controls in the
Group tab allow you
specify the size,
color and blend of
grouped objects.
Modifying Frames
• The Frame Tab
allows you to
specify the color,
style, and width of
your frame.
Modifying Runarounds
• The Runaround
allows you to specify
runaround path of a
Picture or Text Box.
• The Runaround is
also used to set a
Text Wrap in
QuarkXPress.
Custom Color
• The Colors dialog box
allows you to organize
and change the colors
that are used in your
document.
Colors Palette
• The Colors Palette allows
you to add color to
selected text, pictures,
box backgrounds, lines,
and frames depending on
which tool is selected
from the Tools Palette.
Gradient Fills
• The Colors Palette is
also used to create
gradient fills to be
applied to the
background of the
object boxes.
Inputting Text

Choose the Content
Tool, and click in a text
box to create an
insertion point.
Get Text
• The Get Text dialog box
allows you to import text
files from a variety of
sources.
• The Get Text command is
available when the
Content tool is selected
and a text box is active.
Modifying Text
The controls in the Text
tab allow you specify the
number of columns, the
text inset, the vertical
alignment, and other text
box settings.
Editing Text

cursor at the
beginning of
the mistake in
a sentence:

Choose the Content
tool, press and drag
over the text you want to
highlight, and make your
Correction.
Formatting Text
The Formats tab
displays the Formats
tab of the Paragraph
Attributes dialog box,
which lets you specify
a variety of formats
that affect entire
paragraphs.
Get Picture
• The Get Picture
dialog box allows you
to import picture files
from a variety of
sources.
• The Get Picture
command is available
when the Content tool
is selected and a
picture box is active.
Modify Picture Box
• The controls in the
Picture tab allow you
to specify the
position of a picture
in the picture box.
• You can also specify
the size, angle and
even the color of a
picture.
Grouping Objects
• When you want to keep a
group of object together,
using the Group command
makes thing a lot easier.
• You can group any
combinations of object
together.
• To move the group around,
you use the Item tool, and
to edit an object individually
you use the Content tool.
Space / Align Items
The Space/Align Items dialog
box is used to align or distribute
several object at the same time.
Rulers / Guides
• Used to give you an idea
of the scale of your
document.
• You are given a vertical
and horizontal ruler to
work with.
• The rulers will
automatically adjust to
your document view.
• You can also change the
rule of measure by going
to the Document
Preference dialog box.
Printing Documents
• The Print dialog box
allows you to specify
the output of a
document.
• The Print dialog box is
broken up into five
tabs, Document,
Setup, Output
Options, and Preview.
Document Tab
The Document tab
allows you to specify
various document
output settings.
Setup Tab
The Print Setup tab
allows you to specify the
paper size, document
position, and page
orientation of your
Document.
Options Tab
The Print Options tab allows
you to specify how the
printer deals with printing
your placed pictures.
Preview Tab
The Print Preview tab gives
you a report of your printer
specifications and an
outline view of the settings
before the document is
output.
