Sermon Outline by Tim Norman
Searcy, AR
Luke 10:30-37
• Sins of Commission
– Doing things we should not do
• Sins of Omission
– Not doing the things we ought to do
The Golden Rule Matt. 7:12
• Do NOT do unto others what you do NOT want
them to do unto you?
• “So whatever you wish that others would do
to you, do also to them…”
• What is true of the Golden Rule is true for all
Christians.

Greater Scope Than The Golden Rule
• Gal. 5:19-21 Now the works of the flesh are
evident: sexual immorality, impurity,
sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife,
jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions,
divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and
things like these. I warn you, as I warned you
before, that those who do such things will not
inherit the kingdom of God.
• Sins of Commission
Greater Scope Than The Golden Rule
• Gal. 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy,
peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
gentleness, self-control; against such things there is
no law.
• Sins of Omission
• Eph. 4:20-24 But that is not the way you learned Christ!
assuming that you have heard about him and were taught
in him, as the truth is in Jesus, to put off your old self,
which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt
through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of
your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the
likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.
Greater Scope
• Drunkenness
– Proverbs 23:29-35
• Hatred
Matt. 5:43-48 "You have heard that it was said, 'You shall love your neighbor
and hate your enemy.‘ But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for
those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in
heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends
rain on the just and on the unjust. For if you love those who love you,
what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same?
And if you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others?
Do not even the Gentiles do the same? You therefore must be perfect, as
your heavenly Father is perfect.
1. Learn the Actual Demands of
Righteousness
• For some ignorance is bliss…
• For some it is apathy…
• For us it should be about service…
The Bar of Righteousness is High
• Mk. 12:30-31 And you shall love the Lord your
God with all your heart and with all your soul and
with all your mind and with all your strength.‘
The second is this: 'You shall love your neighbor
as yourself.' There is no other commandment
greater than these.“
• 1 Cor. 16:14 Let all that you do be done in love.
• 1 Cor. 10:31 So, whether you eat or drink, or
whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.
The Bar of Righteousness is High
• Rom 12:9-11 Let love be genuine. Abhor what is
evil; hold fast to what is good. Love one another
with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in
showing honor. Do not be slothful in zeal, be
fervent in spirit, serve the Lord.
• Jude 20-21 But you, beloved, building yourselves
up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy
Spirit, keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting
for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads
to eternal life.
Every Aspect of Our Lives
• Col. 3:17 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly,
teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom,
singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with
thankfulness in your hearts to God.
• Heb. 4:12-13 For the word of God is living and active,
sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the
division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow,
and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the
heart. And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all
are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we
must give account.
To Put Off Sins of Omission
• 2. No Fear of Failure
– Matt. 25:24-25, 30
– The only thing worse than trying and failing is failing
to try.
• 3. No More Procrastination
– Prov. 3: 27-28 Do not withhold good from those to
whom it is due, when it is in your power to do it. Do
not say to your neighbor, "Go, and come again,
tomorrow I will give it"—when you have it with you.
4. Work Hard
• Anything worth doing is worth doing well.
• No one said being a Christian would be easy.
• It is relatively easy to put off sins of
commission. You just have to try.
• Matt. 25:26-29
– It was a lot less trouble for the 1 talent man to do
nothing
Which One Is Easier?
Sins of Commission
Sins of Omission
Do NOT commit adultery
Love you wife as Christ loved the church
Do NOT steal
Do what the Samaritan did
Do NOT murder
Love your enemies`
Do NOT lie
Telling others about Christ and Him
crucified
Do NOT covet
Selling your possessions to give to those in
need. Acts 2:45
5. Accurately Assess Our Abilities and
Opportunities for Doing Good
• Responsibility = ability + opportunity
• Matt. 25:14-15
• Gal 6:10 So then, as we have opportunity, let
us do good to everyone, and especially to
those who are of the household of faith.
Ability
• Eph. 3:20 Now to him who is able to do far
more abundantly than all that we ask or think,
according to the power at work within us,
• Matt. 25:29 For to everyone who has will
more be given, and he will have an
abundance. But from the one who has not,
even what he has will be taken away.
Opportunity
• John 4:35 Do you not say, 'There are yet four
months, then comes the harvest'? Look, I tell
you, lift up your eyes, and see that the fields
are white for harvest.
• Tit. 3:14 And let our people learn to devote
themselves to good works, so as to help cases
of urgent need, and not be unfruitful.
7. Not Overestimate OR
Underestimate God’s Expectations
• Matt. 12:35-37
• Prov. 14:23 In all toil there is profit, but mere
talk tends only to poverty.
– We MUST be working.
• Col. 4:5 Walk in wisdom toward outsiders,
making the best use of the time.
God’s Expectations
• Rom. 3:22-23 the righteousness of God
through faith in Jesus Christ for all who
believe. For there is no distinction: for all have
sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
• 1 Tim. 2:3-4 This is good, and it is pleasing in
the sight of God our Savior, who desires all
people to be saved and to come to the
knowledge of the truth.
We Have Help
• Isa. 41:10 “fear not, for I am with you; be not
dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen
you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my
righteous right hand.”
• Phil. 4:13 “I can do all things through him who
strengthens me.”
The Good Samaritan
• The priest and Levite were just as guilty before
God as the thieves.
• Likewise we are just as guilty when we fail to
do something we should have done as we are
when we do something we should not have
done.
