Where Challenge Question: How do consumer goods get from the Earth to our hands?

Where Challenge Question: I just bought a radio and I want to know where the materials used to make it come from.

Where Challenge I took the radio apart and saw some really cool stuff. Wonder what it is and what its made from?

Where Challenge So…… I asked my teacher…..

Where Challenge Well the items you brought in Johnny are a transformer, resistor and integrated circuit.

Where Challenge Well what are those things, and what are they made out of?

Where Challenge-Transformer A transformer is a device that transfers electric energy from one circuit to another through electrical conductors.

It’s made of steel, plastic, iron, and copper.

Where Challenge • But where do they come from?

Where Challenge-Copper • Well I know that most copper comes from Chile, U.S.A and Canada.

Where Challenge-Iron • Iron is mined a lot in Canada and India. Iron is used 98% of the time for steel so whenever you are mining iron you are basically mining steel.

Where Challenge-plastic • Plastic is a manmade substance made from oil. Oil can be found in many places all around the world. Some big oil wells are found in the U.S, Canada, Saudi Arabia, and Iran.

Where Challenge • Well what about an integrated circuit?

Where Challenge-Integrated Circuit • • An Integrated Circuit is kind of like a chip. Like the motherboard in your computer.

It’s made of Aluminum, Silicon, and copper.

Where Challenge-Aluminum • Aluminum is found in Canada, Australia, Brazil, Guinea, Jamaica, Ghana, Indonesia, Russia and Surinam.

Where Challenge- Silicon • Silicon is found in the U.S, Iceland, Norway, Russia, Brazil and Canada.

Where Challenge- Resistor • • A resistor is a electric circuit component designed to oppose an electric current.

It’s made of ceramic, carbon film and nickel chromium.

Where Challenge • Well where can we find nickel chromium and all that stuff?

Where Challenge-Nickel-Chromium • • Nickel-Chromium is composed of 80% Nickel and 20% Chromium.

Major Nickel production sites are found in Canada, Russia and New Caledonia.

Where Challenge-Chromium • Chromium can be found in South Africa.

Where Challenge- Ceramic • • The ceramic in a resistor is made of aluminum oxide.

Major Aluminum oxide plants are found in Canada, Spain, Portugal ,Italy, Australia, Kazakhstan and Japan.

Where Challenge-Carbon film • • Carbon film is composed mainly of carbon with some graphite. Carbon is a natural resource and is found almost everywhere.

The most major graphite producers are China, India, Brazil and North Korea.

Summary Well Johnny now you know “WHERE” these things come from.
