Par t 1: Readings
• Part 1 will evaluate the readings.
• To prepare, do the following:
• Understand the definition of each stage of the hero
cycle so that you can recognize an example of it.
• Determine which stage(s) of the cycle you can find in
each selection—all the poems, short stories,
essays, and articles.
• Since you have the questions in advance, find
evidence to support the stage(s) you believe each
reading demonstrates.
• You can consult anything in your notebook during
the exam.
• Have plenty of paper, a blue/black pen, and a
dictionary. Read the format guidelines on the
syllabus before you begin writing.

• An exam item might be phrased like this:
The Hero Cycle requires that the hero cross the
“first threshold” and the “return threshold.” How
does Neo meet these two important steps in
The Matrix?

The End.
