Super Connected City Programme for Derry ~ Londonderry Louise Breslin 10th September 2013 Background • In 2011 £100 Million allocated for the Urban Broadband Fund to create 10 super connected cities across the UK (larger cities) • May 2012 £50 Million allocated for a “second wave” of cities to benefit from this programme (smaller cities) • Dec 2012 Derry~Londonderry bid successful Aim •To maximise the availability of ultrafast broadband (80-100 Mbps) •Drive economic growth by enabling businesses to compete in wider national and global markets using ultrafast technology • Achieve city-wide high-speed wireless connectivity •Develop competitive markets in network and broadband provision What does this mean? Voucher Scheme • Cover the connection cost of ultrafast broadband services • Value: in the region of £2000- £3000 • Available to SME’s who meet qualifying criteria – <249 employees – Small Office/ Home Worker (SOHO) – Commercial landlord with multiple SME’s – Possible extension to libraries, voluntary sector, Social Enterprises etc Voucher Scheme - SME Benefits • Market, sell and deliver products to a wide geographical area • Aid extension into new markets • Engage with customers and clients around the world and outside normal working hours • Create media rich web content to advertise and promote your products • Efficiently manage & co-ordinate suppliers in the production chain through real time logistics & collaboration • Train employees more flexibly, at lower cost • Facilitate flexible working – reducing office overheads, travelling time & costs, assist work/ life balance • Send & receive large amounts of data and information rapidly Wireless City Benefits – Improved access to high speed mobile broadband – Expand opportunities for application development and usage – Opportunity to improve digital literacy skills – Promote online and local content Public Wi-Fi Hotspots Benefits – Promoting the use of underused spaces – Use as a marketing tool for the city – Encouraging visitors to dwell in locations for longer – Localised marketing content – Greater interaction between citizens and local businesses Demand Stimulation • Tailored and structured programme of support to help small businesses to adopt, utilise and fully exploit the economic opportunities presented by the introduction of ultrafast broadband • Product development projects, cluster programmes, awareness raising workshops and networking events If you are interested in finding out more: [email protected]
