New Timetable - Changes
•Assembly is now in the afternoon (2.45- 3.05)
•English (with MFL) (9.05 – 10.35)
•Upper school break time 10:35 – 10.55 (20 mins)

English
• Class based
• Children are grouped according to
ability within the classroom and the
work is suitably differentiated.
• Continually assessed: new assessment
systems.
• We are linking our Creative Curriculum
topics with our English where possible.
English
• Guided reading – small groups of
children working with an adult (1 group
working independently – this will be
rotated). Wednesday
• Spellings – 4 groups (Tracks and 3
differentiated groups). We will be
teaching the rule / letter string. Tuesday
• SPaG – each week there will be a more
focused SPaG session. Reinforced in all
lessons.
• Extended writing – the children will be
asked to write a lengthy piece of writing
once a week.
Mrs Davis
• Part time member of the Year 5 team.
• Teaching maths.
• Teaching a small group of children - you
should have had a letter).
• Set homework for those in her group.
• Your child may also read to Mrs Davis –
this will be recorded in the planner.
• Not around in the afternoon however can
be contacted via the planner.
Maths
• 4 sets – Split into 2 (upper and lower)
• Children are grouped according to
ability within the set and the work is
suitably differentiated.
• Times tables – these will be set by the
teacher depending on the level and
need of the children.
• Mental maths – this will take place as
formal tests and regular practise in
class

• New Curriculum
– Bigger emphasis on formal written
methods. However it is important
that the children use the most
efficient method (not always column
method)
– The new curriculum focuses on
breadth and enrichment – especially
those of higher ability
• Assessment - Like the English levels
have gone.

Creative Curriculum Summer Term
Struggle over England
• Period of history stretching from Anglo-Saxon rule,
through the arrival of the Vikings up until the rule of
Edward the Confessor.
• This topic will focus on the power struggle between
the kingdoms of England as they came together to
form the country we know now.
• This topic is still being planned in detail as (in this
form) it is new to the curriculum.

MFL - French
As a school we have chosen to study French.
We are using a web based program which
allows the children to hear native speakers.

read 4 times.

How can you help at home?
• Hearing your child read and read to him/her
• Ask your child questions about what they are reading
• Practise mental maths skills and practical applications
of maths
• Try to provide a reasonably quiet place for your child
to do homework
• Encourage your child to discuss their homework with
you and give support where needed
• Make use of your local library / internet to encourage
your child to find out more about the topics they are
studying
• Try to help your child to see the enjoyable aspects of
homework
• Praise and encouragement
Healthy snack reminder
Please remember that the children can bring a snack for
break time. However this must be a healthy snack.
This could include:
Fruit
Cereal bars – not the chocolate ones please
Dried fruit
NO SWEETS OR CHOCOLATES please.
