Meet the Teams Rock Paper Scissors Rules • Team 1 goes first. Then Team 2. Then Team 3 • Each team put its desks in a circle. • Everybody must have their Packet and Study Guide out. • Work as a team to find the answers to the questions. • All the answers are in your packet. • Fill out your study guide as we go. Team Spokesperson • Each person on your team must take a turn being the spokesperson for the team. • The teacher selects first spokesperson for each group. Then, each time it is your team’s turn it moves one to the right. • If you get it right, spokesperson should take the shot. • If the spokespersons decides not to shoot, the replacement shooter may only shoot for a maximum of two points. How to Score Points • If your team gets an answer right, you get a chance to shoot for points. • NO BACKBOARD ALLOWED!! • The trash should be at the front of the room. • 1 point: closest line of black tape. • 2 points: halfway back • 3 points: furthest line of black tape • 4 points: your back touching the back wall. How to Lose Points • -1 Points: Hit the Promethean Board • -4 Points: Block or disrupt a shot Question • What is a Push Factor? Give Examples. Answer • It is an island in New York harbor where millions of immigrants from Europe were required to enter the USA during the early 1900s. Question • Who were the Rough Riders? Answer • A group of volunteers led by Teddy Roosevelt. They fought in Cuba during the SpanishAmerican War. They are credited with the victory at the Battle of San Juan Hill. Question • What is Yellow Journalism? How did it help start the Spanish-American War? Answer • Yellow Journalism is exaggerated new reporting which tries to get readers all riled up. • It helped start the Spanish-American war because US newspapers blamed the explosion of the U.S.S. Maine on Spain, even though there was no proof. Question • Who were the Allied Powers? Answer • They were a military alliance that won WWI and WWII. • During WWI: Britain, France, Italy, Russia, USA • During WWII: Britain, France, Soviet Union (Russia), USA Question • Who were the Central Powers? Answer • They were the military alliance that lost WWI. • Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Ottoman Turkey Question • What were bootleggers? Answer • People who smuggled alcohol during Prohibition (1920s) Question • What is a Speakeasy? Answer • A secret nightclub where alcohol was served during Prohibition (1920s). Answer • • • • Rough Rider –fought in Cuba Progressive President – reformed food quality Conservationist –setup national parks “Trustbuster” –broke up monopolies Question • What was industrialization? Answer • The large development of factories and industry in the USA following the Civil War (farms to factories) Question • What is Urbanization? Answer • The large development of cities after the Civil War as people moved from the country into the city (country to city). Question • Who were the Muckrakers? Answer • They were progressive journalists that tried to expose problems in American society. Their goal was to create change. Question • What was racial segregation? Answer • Separation in public spaces and accommodations based on race. • Example: separate seats on busses, separate seating in restaurants Question • What is conservation? Answer • Trying to save the natural resources of the USA for future generations. Question • What was the Open Door Policy? Answer • The approach the USA took toward European powers trying to carve up the Chinese Empire in the late 1800s. The USA maintained that the “door should remain open” to all nations trading with China. Question • What was the Convoy System? What problem was it trying to solve? Answer • Supplies and troops were closely guarded by a military escort on their way to Europe during WWI. The Convoy system attempted to protect these ships from Germen U-boat attacks. Question • What is women’s suffrage? Answer • 19th Amendment: the right for women to vote passed in 1920 during the Progressive Era. Question • What was the Red Scare? Answer • The fear that there was Communist conspiracy to overthrow the U.S. government after WWI. Question • Why is the Battle of San Juan Hill famous? Answer • Teddy Roosevelt led the Rough Riders in a charge that made him famous at home. Question • Who were the Flappers? Answer • A counter culture of women who challenged social boundaries. They “drank, dated, and danced.” They wore shorter clothing, more flashy clothing, and showed more skin than before. Question • What was the Great Migration? Answer • After WWI, many African-Americans moved off of the plantations in the South to factory jobs in Northern Cities. Question • What was the New Deal? Answer • FDR’s plan to fix the Great Depression (Relief, Recovery, Reform). Question • What was the Dust Bowl? Answer • Massive Dust Storms in the Great Plains caused by over-farming/grazing and drought during the Great Depression. Question • What was the Pearl Harbor attack? Answer • The Japanese “sneak-attacked” Pearl Harbor Hawaii, drawing the USA into WWII. Question • Who were the Axis Powers? Answer • The Fascist governments of the world teamed up for WWII. • Germany, Italy, Japan Question What was Island-Hopping? Answer • Strategy used by the USA in the Pacific Theater to defeat Japan. • Hop from island to island. Skip hard to capture strongholds and let them starve out. Just capture ports and airstrips so that the USA could immediately attack the next spot. Question • What was the impact of the atomic bomb in WWII? Answer • The USA dropped two atomic bombs on Japanese cities tens of thousands of people. The Japanese then surrendered. Question • Which President was an influential protector of the environment? Answer • Teddy Roosevelt Question • What do we think sank the USS Maine, starting the Spanish-American War? Answer • Today, we think it was an accident. • Then, we thought it was a Spanish bomb. Question • Why did Teddy Roosevelt want to build the Panama Canal? Answer • Reduce the travel time for America ships between Atlantic and Pacific (especially naval ships) Question • What new technologies were introduced on a large scale in WWI? Answer • Machine guns/torpedoes/submarines • Airplanes/tanks/poison gas • Barbwire/flamethrowers Question • Why did the USA enter WWI? Answer • Overproduction by US factories and farms • Risky borrowing practices by Americans • Banking Panics (bank runs) Question • How was the Great Depression experienced differently by men and women? Answer • Men: seen as “bread winners,” experienced high rates of unemployment and stood in breadlines. • Women: seen as “house keepers” experience job discrimination, began to become stay-athome moms again, considered it disgraceful receive public charity. Question • What successes did immigrants experience in achieving the American Dream in the 1920s? Failures? Answer • Successes: – Moved into middle class from povery – Bought homes, cars, telephones, radios, new clothes, etc. • Failures: – Red Scare – Nativism – Emergency Quota Act – Palmer Raids Question • Why was there such an increase in Nativism after WWI? Answer • Many returning veterans were afraid that immigrants would steal the good factory jobs by working for less pay. • Many Americans felt tradition American values were threatened by the new mix of different cultures with which they came into contact. Question • What are some technological changes which occurred in the 1920s? Answer • Telephone, radio, car, movies, etc. Question • How did unsustainable spending habits among American families help deepen the Great Depression? Identify examples of these spending practices. Answer • The average American went into debt in order to buy the new things that went along with the American Dream. • Examples: – Installment payments – Buying stock on margin – Buying on credit Question • How did the Dust Bowl effect the WHOLE country? Answer • Great Plains: Farming collapses, people lose their farms, crops, and livestock. • West Coast: “Okies” move west to look for work. • East Coast: Cities rained on by dust storms through the 1930s. Question • What important change did the NEW DEAL reflect in the U.S. government’s approach to handling poverty? Answer • A shift from the government taking a “handsoff approach” to a “hands-on approach.” • Hands-off: Charity and families help the poor. • Hands-on: Government programs help the poor. Question • Why did the US enter WWII? Answer • Pearl Harbor attack • Support Allies against Nazi Germany Question • Why was Hitler able to come to power in Germany after WWII? Answer • Germany was humiliated by the Treaty of Versailles after WWI and hurt by the Great Depression. • He had a plan to recover from both and restore Germany to greatness. Question • Why did Harry Truman decide to drop atomic bombs on Japan? Answer • He believe it would save many American lives. The invasion of Japan was expected to be very bloody and costly.
