IN THE BEGINNING
Genesis from the Creation
to Abraham
GENESIS CHAPTER TWO
• God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy
Spirit were all involved in creation
• John 1:1-4
• In the beginning was the Word, and the Word
was with God, and the Word was God. He
was in the beginning with God. All things
were made through Him, and without Him
nothing was made that was made. In Him was
life, and the life was the light of men.
GENESIS CHAPTER TWO
• Gen. 1:3 Then God said, "Let there be light";
and there was light…”
• 6 Then God said, "Let there be a firmament in
the midst of the waters…”
• 9 Then God said, "Let the waters under the
heavens be gathered together into one place,
and let the dry land appear.."
GENESIS CHAPTER TWO
• John 1:10-13
• He was in the world, and the world was made
through Him, and the world did not know
Him. He came to His own, and His own did
not receive Him. But as many as received
Him, to them He gave the right to become
children of God, to those who believe in His
name: who were born, not of blood, nor of the
will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of
God.
GENESIS CHAPTER TWO
• v. 15-17
• Then the Lord God took the man and put
him in the Garden of Eden to tend and keep
it. And the Lord God commanded the man,
saying, "Of every tree of the garden you
may freely eat; but of the tree of the
knowledge of good and evil you shall not
eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall
surely die.”
GENESIS CHAPTER TWO
• v. 18-23
• And the Lord God said, "It is not good that man
should be alone; I will make him a helper
comparable to him." Out of the ground the Lord
God formed every beast of the field and every bird
of the air, and brought them to Adam to see what
he would call them. And whatever Adam called
each living creature that was its name. So Adam
gave names to all cattle, to the birds of the air, and
to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was
not found a helper comparable to him. (cont.)
GENESIS CHAPTER TWO
• v. 18-23 (cont.)
• And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall
on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his
ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place. Then
the rib that the Lord God had taken from man
He made into a woman, and He brought her to
the man. And Adam said: "This is now bone of
my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be
called Woman, because she was taken out of
Man."
GENESIS CHAPTER TWO
• God determines that Adam needs a helper
– (The animal didn’t cut it)
• Adam is put to sleep—an anesthesia of some form
– A rib is taken by some type of divine surgery
• Recall: man was made from the ground (like the
plants and animals)
• But woman was created from man
– (Maybe why men tend to be more outdoorsman,
hunters?)
GENESIS CHAPTER TWO
• I Cor, 11:8, 11-12
• For man is not from woman, but
woman from man...11 Nevertheless,
neither is man independent of woman,
nor woman independent of man, in the
Lord. For as woman came from man,
even so man also comes through
woman; but all things are from God.
GENESIS CHAPTER TWO
• v. 24-25
• Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother
and be joined to his wife, and they shall become
one flesh. And they were both naked, the man and
his wife, and were not ashamed.
• God instituted marriage
• Both man and woman are created in God’s image
– Both are to rule, subdue, have dominion
– Nakedness brings no shame in marriage, nor
does sexual intimacy in marriage
GENESIS CHAPTER TWO
• Leviticus 18 includes a list of sexual sins
forbidden under the Law of Moses:
– Incest, adultery, homosexuality, and bestiality
• These sins are considered “defiling” sins:
– Defiling of the temple of God
– Harmful to others (in contrast to fantasy, thoughtsins)
• These activities are called “abominations”
• They are worthy of death in the Old Testament
GENESIS CHAPTER THREE
• v.1-7
• Now the serpent was more cunning than any
beast of the field that the Lord God had made.
And he said to the woman, "Has God indeed
said, 'You shall not eat of every tree of the
garden'?" And the woman said to the serpent,
"We may eat the fruit of the trees of the
garden; but of the fruit of the tree which is in
the midst of the garden, God has said, 'You
shall not eat it, nor shall you touch it, lest you
die.’ (cont.)
GENESIS CHAPTER THREE
• v.1-7 (cont.)
• " Then the serpent said to the woman, "You will
not surely die. For God knows that in the day you
eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be
like God, knowing good and evil." So when the
woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it
was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to
make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She
also gave to her husband with her, and he
ate. Then the eyes of both of them were opened,
and they knew that they were naked; and they
sewed fig leaves together and made themselves
coverings.
GENESIS CHAPTER THREE
• The serpent: perhaps the snake in the Garden was
different than what we have now, after the Fall
– Maybe the serpent stood upright and was
beautiful
• Satan likely possessed the serpent in this early
Genesis account and was speaking through it
– Satan will later in the Bible possess Judah
Iscariot and the antichrist
– Satan is described as having taken on the form
of a dragon in Revelations
GENESIS CHAPTER THREE
• II Cor. 11:3, 14
• But I am afraid that as the serpent
deceived Eve by his cunning, your
thoughts will be led astray from a
sincere and pure devotion to Christ...
14 And no wonder, for even Satan
disguises himself as an angel of light.
GENESIS CHAPTER THREE
• Rev. 12:9
• And the great dragon was thrown down, that
ancient serpent, who is called the devil and
Satan, the deceiver of the whole world--he was
thrown down to the earth, and his angels were
thrown down with him.
• Rev. 20:2
• And he (an angel) seized the dragon, that
ancient serpent, who is the devil and Satan,
and bound him for a thousand years
GENESIS CHAPTER THREE
• Lucifer (his name before his fall) or Satan seems
to be described in Isaiah 14 and Ezekiel 28 (as we
discussed previously)
• Satan is also described as a liar, a deceiver. and
the accuser of the believer
• John 8:44
• You are of your father the devil, and your will is
to do your father's desires. He was a murderer
from the beginning, and has nothing to do with the
truth, because there is no truth in him. When he
lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a
liar and the father of lies.
GENESIS CHAPTER THREE
• Rev. 12:9-11
• So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of
old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the
whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his
angels were cast out with him. Then I heard a loud
voice saying in heaven, "Now salvation, and
strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the
power of His Christ have come, for the accuser of
our brethren, who accused them before our God
day and night, has been cast down. And they
overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by
the word of their testimony, and they did not love
their lives to the death.
GENESIS CHAPTER THREE
• The serpent in the Garden questions the Word of God
(“Has God said?”)
– Satan challenges the couple to doubt the validity of
God’s words, promises, and warnings
• The serpent contradicts what God had said by
claiming, “You surely will not die.”
• Satan wants the man and woman to be separated from
God, and to die
– Why? The Lord gave them the earth to rule, but the
serpent wants to rule it himself (having lost his rule
and authority in heaven)
GENESIS CHAPTER THREE
• The temptation to Eve: that the fruit was:
– Good for food
– A delight to the eyes
– Desirable to make one wise
• There is great danger in following the lusts of our
appetites and eyes and pride
• I John 2:16
• For all that is in the world--the desires of the flesh
and the desires of the eyes and pride in
possessions--is not from the Father but is from the
world.
GENESIS CHAPTER THREE
• The three temptation that Satan offers Jesus in
Luke 4 are similar to the fruit in the Garden
– Food
– All the wealth of the world
– The presumption (pride) of God’s automatic
protection
• Jesus, unlike the first couple, was not deceived
• At the appointed time (His second coming) Jesus
will be granted by God all that Satan offered Him
– The same is true for us
GENESIS CHAPTER THREE
• The tree of the knowledge of good and
evil stood between Adam and Eve and
the tree of life
– As it does for us as well
• The tree of life was preserved by God
even after the couple was driven out of
the garden
– It will be in heaven in Revelation
GENESIS CHAPTER THREE
• Rev. 2:7b
• “To the one who conquers I will grant to eat of
the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God.'”
• Rev. 22:1-2
• Then the angel showed me the river of the water
of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne
of God and of the Lamb, also on either side of
the river, the tree of life with its twelve kinds of
fruit, yielding its fruit each month. The leaves of
the tree were for the healing of the nations.
GENESIS CHAPTER THREE
• The consequence of the serpent’s temptation:
– The woman took from the tree and ate
– Gave to her husband to eat
– Note: the woman was deceived, but the man willfully
disobeyed
• The couple immediately knew that they were
naked
– They covered themselves and experienced shame for
the first time
– The covering of themselves is the first act of man
doing something to fix his situation without being
instructed by God to do so
GENESIS CHAPTER THREE
• The sin of Adam and Eve spread to all
mankind
• Rom. 5:12
• Therefore, just as sin came into the
world through one man, and death
through sin, and so death spread to all
men because all sinned...
GENESIS CHAPTER THREE
• Adam and Eve were likely “clothed” with God’s
righteousness prior to the Fall, and having lost this,
they naturally felt naked
• Ps. 132:9
• Let your priests be clothed with righteousness, and let
your saints shout for joy.
• Eph. 4:22-24
• Put off your old self, which belongs to your former
manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires,
and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and put
on the new self, created after the likeness of God in
true righteousness and holiness.
GENESIS CHAPTER THREE
• Of all the animals, only man wears clothes-the “badge” that we brought sin into the
world, not the animals
• The couple had no need to know evil
– God knows good and evil (as the serpent
correctly stated), but God can know of
evil but not partake of it)
– Man could not (and cannot now) know of
evil, but not partake of it
GENESIS CHAPTER THREE
• II Tim. 2:22
• So flee youthful passions and pursue
righteousness, faith, love, and peace,
along with those who call on the Lord
from a pure heart.
• James 4:7
• Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil
and he will flee from you.
GENESIS CHAPTER THREE
• What is the end of Adam’s (and our) rejection of
God, His redemption of us, and our re-acceptance
of Him?
– After brief suffering we will appreciate eternal
blessing, bliss, and fellowship with God
• I Cor. 2:9-10
• But as it is written: "Eye has not seen, nor ear
heard, Nor have entered into the heart of man The
things which God has prepared for those who love
Him." But God has revealed them to us through
His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes,
the deep things of God. ”
