The Beginning of Sin
The Beginning of the World
• Genesis 1 & Genesis 2
– Your textbook: p. 77-80
• Two stories: J & P
– Genesis 1: P
– Genesis 2: J
The Creation Stories
1st—forceful, stately,
grand; awesome
dramatic act by
glorious, majestic God
2nd—lighter in tone,
down-to-earth;
anthropomorphic
God
BOTH REVEAL IMPORTANT TRUTHS ABOUT
GOD, CREATION, AND HUMAN BEINGS
Differences between the stories
1st Story (P)
2nd Story (J)
God first creates the environment
Anthropomorphic God intimately involved
Humans created last, the climax of
creation “In His image”
Humans created first – formed from clay
Responsible for the rest of Creation
All the rest created for man’s benefit
Nothing happens that is not part of the
divine plan
God brings all creatures to man to be
named
Everything God created is good
YHWH created women later, wants a
union of the two
The Fall of Man

– Mistreating the world & each other
– Uncontrolled behavior
• Adam & Eve (Gen 3) – eating the apple in the
garden

their own decisions
– Lose perfection of intimacy with God
The Fallen Life
• Mortality, toil & unhappiness possible

• Noah’s Flood & Ark
