Informational Interviews
• Ever heard of an informational interview? Why not arrange to meet the
person in your dream job or company? Start with somebody you know or
can be introduced to though a contact.
• Suggest meeting at the interviewee’s place of work if possible – you will
gain insight into work environment and culture.
• Bear informational interviews in mind when attending conferences.

• How did you get into this field of work? Explore traditional and alternative
entry routes and skills/experience required.
• How do you see the sector changing over the next 2-3 years?
• What kind of people will be needed in the future?
• Can you suggest two or three other people that could help?
Get the most from conferences and other professional
meetings
• Before the conference:
– Make a list of all the people you “met” online who may attend
– Attend any small preceding events or workshops
– Reserve a room in main conference hotel
– Study talks and room locations
– Practice your own talk several times in realistic conditions
• At the conference:
– Spend most of your time tracking the people you want to meet
– Keep conversation to safe, professional topics
– Don’t pass up on opportunities for informal socialising
– Seek out the best people of your own professional cohort
– Relationships with more powerful people will take more time
