How do I start?
Run PowerPoint
The red button with a Pac-Man shape, next to
the W
Or, “Start,” “Programs,” “PowerPoint”
Open a new presentation
Start making slides!
Step 1: Make a title slide
In the “New Slide”
window, select the title
slide layout (the first
one)
Click in the large
square
Type the title of your
presentation
Click in the small
square
Type the subtitle of
your presentation
Click the “New Slide”
button on the
powerbar (the white
rectangle with the star)
to continue
Step 2: Choose a background
Click on “Format”
Click on “Apply Design Template”
Preview the options; I chose “Expedition”
Click on “Apply”
This background will automatically apply to
all your slides.
Step 3: Make the Remaining
Slides
For each slide, select
an appropriate layout
in the “Autolayout”
window
Click in the box you
want and then type
your information
PowerPoint will
automatically format
bulleted lists, like this
one
When you’re done
with each slide, click
the new slide button,
choose an appropriate
layout, and type away
Adding Graphics
Choose a layout with
room for graphics.
Click “Insert,” then
“Picture,” then “From
file.”
Go to the place you
keep your images and
select one.
Click “insert.”

Move the picture with the
mouse until it’s in the
graphics box.
To size the picture:
Select it (click in the
picture)
Move the cursor to one of
the corners until you see a
double arrow
Drag the cursor to get the
desired size.
Adding the Bells and Whistles
You can animate your presentation
Click on “Slide Show”
Click on “Custom Animation”
In the upper left box, check what you want
animated (title, text, or object)

On the “Order and
Timing” tab, select the
order in which you
want the elements to
appear
Click on “Mouse
click”
Click the “Effects” tab
Select options under
“Entry animation and
sound”
Click “Preview” to see
how it looks and
sounds
I chose “Fly from left”
and “Fly from right”
and “whoosh”
Other Special Effects
You can also control the transitions between
slides
Click on “Slide Show”
Click on “Slide Transition”
Under “Effect,” preview the options
Click “Apply” or “Apply all”
I chose the “Box In” option
Seeing What it Looks Like
Click “Slide Show”
Click “View Show”
Or, click the picture of the projection screen in the
lower left corner
Hit ENTER or right-arrow or the space bar (or
click the mouse) to advance to next slide and to
run the animations
If you want to stop at any time, right-click, then
click “End Show”
Editing the Presentation
Move through the slide
show just as you do in a
document
Ctrl-home takes you to
the first slide, Ctrl-end to
the last
Page up and Page down
move you forwards and
backwards one slide at a
time
Fix any errors you found
when you previewed the
show
Make other refinements
Don’t forget to save!
How do I delete a slide?
On the lower left corner of the screen, click
the icon with the 4 little boxes
This is “slide sorter” mode
Select the slide you want to delete
Hit the delete key: it’s gone!
How do I change the order of my
slides?
Select “Slide Sorter” mode (the four little
boxes)
Select the slide you want to move
Drag it to where you want it
What if I don’t like any of the
backgrounds?
You can leave the
presentation blank
(black on white)
You can change the
background color or
texture
Click on “Format”;
then “Background”
To change color, click
one of the colors that
appears
For more choices, click
“more colors”
When you find a color
you like, click “Apply”
(for the current slide)
or “Apply to All” (for
the whole show)

Click “Format,” then “Background”
Click “Fill Effect”
Click the “Texture” tab
Select the one you like, then click “OK”
What if I’m using a template, but
I need more room for my image?
Click “Format,” then “Background”
Click “Omit background graphics from
master”
Click “Apply” to remove them from the
current slide alone
How do I crop an image?
Select the picture; a
“picture” toolbar should
appear
Click the symbol that
looks like 2 superimposed
right angles
Move the cursor over the
picture until that symbol
appears
Push in the edge that you
want cropped
Here’s an example
I cropped this guy on
the left and the right,
to get rid of the excess
background
Then I enlarged the
resulting image
Printing the Presentation
Click “File,” then “Print”
Under “Print what,” select “Slides” to print
each slide as a separate page
Or select “Handouts” to print multiple
slides on a page
I chose “Handouts (6 slides/page)”
Projecting the Presentation
At the Media Center,
reserve the LCD projector
and laptop for the time
you need it
Save the presentation on
floppy disks using “Pack
and Go”
Click “File,” then “Pack
and Go”
Follow the directions
Have several empty,
formatted floppies on hand
Before class, go to the
Media Center again to
unpack your presentation
onto the laptop’s hard
drive
Insert the first floppy
into the laptop
Click on “My
computer,” then
“floppy A”
Click on “png setup”

Ahead of time, have
someone in the Media
Center show you how
to run the laptop and
LCD projector
Get to your classroom
early, if possible
On the laptop, run
PowerPoint, then View
show
I have the first slide
projected with the
screen up and the
lights on until I’m
ready
If you lose the image,
hit ctrl-alt-del
