Variations on SIP Trunking

variety of SIP Trunking flavors.
– SIP Trunking via Dedicated Lines
• Requires a T1, DSL or PRI for service delivery
• Purports to deliver better quality
• Limited footprint to where dedicated service are available
• Large recurring cost due to leased lines
– SIP Trunking as a Feature
• Provided by vendors of hosted IP PBX or other services
• Not normally the primary focus
• Competitive with VARS or legacy systems
• May have scalability or geographic limitations

– With PSTN connections, customers receive:
• Called party information (DNIS – Dialed Number Identification
Service)
• Calling party information (ANI – Answer Number Identification)
• Caller Entered Digits (CED)
– With SIP trunking, this information is also provided per RFC 2833
(http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc2833.html) via the RTP payload for DTMF
Digits, Telephony Tones and Telephony Signals.
– CODECs supported include:

• CODECs can be changed “on the fly” to meet CPE
requirements and address bandwidth limitations.
