Sustainability
Objectives
• What is
sustainability?
• Why is a sustainable
lifestyle important for
the health of the
planet?
• Sustainability
involves:
• Recycling
• Energy efficient
houses
• Ecological transport
Sustainable Development
• Sustainable
development is a
pattern of resource
use that aims to meet
human needs while
preserving the
environment so that
these needs can be
met not only in the
present, but in the
indefinite future
Recycling
http://www.bexley.gov.uk/service/environ/recycling/recyclingvideo.html
• We need to see waste
as a resource Rather
than a problem
• Most towns and cities
now have the facilities to
recycle glass, paper,
aluminium (cans) and
rags (old clothes)
• It is possible to recycle
other things to
Transport and the environment
• The impact of global
warming is becoming
evermore accepted
as a critical risk and a
continued rise in CO2
concentrations means
that a catastrophic
change in the earth’s
temperature may
happen.
• In the UK transport is
responsible for 25%
of CO2 emissions,
with road transport
accounting for around
three quarters of this
25%. This means
that transport can
offer a substantial
reduction in overall
CO2 emissions

Biofuel
http://www.sciencefriday.com/videos/watch/10079
• Biofuel is defined as
solid, liquid or
gaseous fuel derived
from relatively
recently dead
biological material
and is distinguished
from fossil fuels,
which are derived
from long dead
biological material
• Theoretically, biofuels
can be produced from
any (biological)
carbon source;
although, the most
common sources are
photosynthetic plants
Alternative Transport
• A hybrid vehicle is a
vehicle that uses two or
more distinct power
sources to move the
vehicle
Power sources include:
• On-board or out-board
rechargeable energy
storage
• Gasoline or Diesel Fuel
• Hydrogen
• Compressed air
• Human powered e.g.
pedaling or rowing
• Wind
• Compressed or liquefied
natural gas
• Solar energy
Energy Efficient house
• Keeping your home warm
is expensive, especially in
winter
• Using energy efficient
light bulbs helps reduce
the cost of electricity
• Using insulation helps to
keep the heat in
• Solar panels can be used
to turn sunlight into
electrical energy offering
a further reduction in the
cost of consumable
energy
• Double glazing, draughtproofing around the door
and curtains in the
windows can also help
The Energy efficient house
