What is MSU, Mankato doing to Recycle? • What is our definition of recycling? • We recycle or repurpose cardboard and mixed paper • Cardboard goes to a company in Cedar Rapids Iowa called International paper. It is repurposed. • Mixed paper goes to a company in Wisconsin called SCA and is repurposed into hygiene products. • Aluminum cans, glass and plastic bottles or better known as Co-Mingled product is bailed at LJP Mankato and sold to Cedar Poly Plastic in Iowa and is sold on the market. Recycling • • • • • • • • So what is our definition of recycling? We say we recycle 98% We accumulated a total of 1,215.56 tons of refuse in 2014. We recycled 28.74 tons of Co-Mingled product; pop cans, plastic and glass bottles. We recycled 74.84 tons of mixed paper which the University does receive a % of pay back on based on market value. We recycled 103.84 tons of cardboard in which the University does receive a % of pay back on based on market value. So total we recycled 207.42 tons. About 17% So how do we get the statement we recycle 98%? Waste to Energy. Recycling Recycling • Could we do a better job as a University of recycling? • Yes, however it is in the eye of the beholder. Why do I say that? Lots of variables in my mind… • Audits have been done not good – Res Life – Academic – CSU • How are we educating our students to recycle? • Brochure placed in welcome packets Recycling • So where do we go from here? • As a committee I think we need to define “recycling” • What are we doing to educate campus community as a whole?
