Plot
(definition)
• Plot is the organized
steps or sequence of
events that make up a
story.
• Every plot is made up of
a series of incidents that
are related to one
another.
1. Exposition

This usually occurs at the beginning of a short story.
Here the characters are introduced.
We also learn about the setting of the story.
Most importantly, we are introduced to the main conflict (main
problem).
• Main Conflict Ends Exposition and Introduces Rising Action
2. Rising Action
• This part of the story begins to develop the
conflict(s).
• Building of interest or suspense occurs.
• Characters work to solve conflict.
3. Climax
• Highest point of tension in the story.
• Main character comes face to face with
ending their conflict.
4. Falling Action
• Tension
decreases.
• The conflict(s) is
over.
5. Resolution
• Shows how the
characters have
changed or affected
by the conflict.
• Everything is wrapped
up neatly.

• Witch tells Gretel to light oven to cook
Gretel.
• Gretel acts like oven isn’t hot enough.
• When Witch checks, Gretel pushes her
in and closes the door, trapping the
Witch.

• Gretel frees
Hansel.
• Children leave
the house
safely with her
treasure.
5. Resolution
• Children run
home, find
father weeping.
• He has
disposed of
Stepmother.
• They live
happily ever
after.
