Year 2
Autumn Curriculum
Information
Literacy
Numeracy
This term the children will be developing their
knowledge on non-chronological reports. They
will have to gather information about night time
animals using information books, fact sheets and
the internet and then create their own report
on their finding. Also the children will be
developing their story writing skills by planning
their own adventure story in outer space.
Developing children’s ability to understand place value
and number sequences will be our main focus this term.
As part of this, we will be counting forwards and
backwards from any one or two digit number along with
counting in twos, fives and tens. We will also be
developing our mental methods so that the children can
recall addition and subtraction facts to 10 and 20
quickly.
Art / DT
In art and design the children will
learn how to make hand puppets and
will design their own scary alien. The
children will develop techniques in
printing and use their skills to create
a solar system.
Space
what is out there?
History
This term the children will develop their
knowledge of famous people who went into
space. We will discuss their significance
through understanding
why we still
remember them today.
Geography
Children will develop their mapping skills
this term and create a map of space and
their own imaginary planet. By learning
about features of our planet, children will
be able to compare living on earth to living
on space.
Social and Emotional
During circle time and PSHE
lessons, we will be looking at New
Beginnings. As part of this we will
consider how to create enjoyable
and considerate relationships with
others.
Religious Education
Beginnings will be our first topic this
term. As part of this, we will consider
the many beginnings each day offers and
how God is present in every beginning,
such as the beginning of the world in the
creation story. In our Collective
Worship, children will be choosing and
leading their own sessions.
Physical Education
For PE this term the children will be
developing their skills gymnastics. They
will learn different ways of balancing
and travelling which will help them
create their own sequence. In addition
to this, children will work on developing
team building skills.
Science
This term we will be looking closely at
forces. Discussing gravity and also the
different forces used to move objects,
e.g., rockets. We will also learn about
different light sources, especially the
sun and understand why we have day and
night.
