Entry-Level Training Module I
Lesson One
Preventing Illnesses




Use universal sanitation procedures
Handle food properly

Pull down paper towel
Use running water that drains
Apply liquid soap and lather hands to loosen

Be sure the diaper area was sanitized after
the last use
Wash hands thoroughly
Dispose of used diapers in proper container
Wipe child (front to back) with baby wipe and
dispose of wipe properly
Wash the child’s hands
Clean and sanitize the diaper area

Cleaning







Use hot water and soap or detergent.
Scrub vigorously to remove dirt and soil.
Change water when it looks or feels dirty, after
cleaning bathrooms and diaper changing area, and
after cleaning the kitchen.
Always clean the least dirty items/surfaces first.
Always clean high surfaces first, then low surfaces.
Always clean surfaces/items before disinfecting, since
soil will block the effect of the disinfectant.
Clean completely on a regular schedule and spot
clean as needed.

ALWAYS consider the safety of children
when disinfecting
In most cases, use BLEACH as your
disinfectant.

(solution 1)
Wipe area to distribute disinfectant evenly
Use single-service, disposable paper towels
and discard in a plastic-lined container
Allow to air dry

least 2 minutes
DO NOT rinse objects after soaking

Wipe table with BLEACH (solution 1), let dry before
filling with water
Soak all toys to be used in BLEACH (solution 2) for
2 minutes prior to use
Have all children wash hands before and after play
Watch carefully so children don’t drink the water
Drain the water after play is over and between
groups of children

Don’t cross contaminate, use separate dishes, utensils,
and cutting boards for raw foods and cooked foods,
meats and vegetables

Wash hands and surfaces often
Cook to proper temperature to kill bacteria *

Freeze or refrigerate promptly
Infant Formula







Sterilize all utensils, bottles, and water
Wash hands thoroughly
Make sure measurements are accurate
Never feed infants honey or cow’s milk
DO NOT heat bottles in a microwave!
Store in refrigerator
Throw away formula after feeding
Breast Milk





Wash hands thoroughly
Label containers with date/time pumped and
child’s name
Freeze if storing more than 24 hours (safe if
frozen up to six months)
Thaw by placing in bowl of warm water for 30
minutes or running water for 4 minutes
NEVER MICROWAVE or REFREEZE
