Christmas in Poland
Christmas is the
most popular family
holiday in many
countries.
Christmas is a very
old festival.This is
a unique time when
people try to be
nice, friendly and
generous.
In Poland
Christmas starts
on December 24th. In Poland we
buy an decorate
the Christmas tree
a few days before
Chistmas.
In Poland and other
countries people
send Christmas
cards to family
and friends and
prepare special
Christmas food.
People buy
presents for all
they love!
People sit at
Christmas table
when the first star
appears in the sky.
Polish children open
their presents on
24 December ufter
supper but in
England children
open their presents
early in the
morning on 25
December.
We have the
custom about the
number of dishes.
Traditionally there
should be twelve of
them and they
must all be tasted.
The most popular
dishes are:
Red borsch, pies or
sour cabbage with
mushroms, fish
(usually carp),and
poppy – seed cake.
Before the family
starts eating, all
itsmembers share the
holy water.
People also have lot of
fun. On that day carol
– singers dressed as an
angel, a devil, King
Herod or Death visit
people’s houses. They
sing and play various
scenes from the Bible.
