SMART GOALS Specific Measureable Attainable Relevant Time-Bound Let’s look at the example on p.13

SMART GOALS THINGS TO CONSIDER Specific  What exactly needs to be accomplished?

 Who else will be involved?

 Where will this take place?

 Why do I want to accomplish this goal?

SMART GOALS THINGS TO CONSIDER Measureable  How will I know I’ve succeeded?

 How much change needs to occur?

 How many accomplishments or actions will it take?

SMART GOALS THINGS TO CONSIDER Attainable  Do I have, or can I get, the resources needed to achieve the goal?

 Is the goal a reasonable stretch for me? (neither out of reach nor too easy)  Are the actions I plan to take likely to bring success?

SMART GOALS THINGS TO CONSIDER Relevant  Is this a worthwhile goal for me right now?

 Is it meaningful to me – or just something others think I should do?

 Would it delay or prevent me from achieving a more important goal?

 Am I willing to commit to achieving this goal?

SMART GOALS THINGS TO CONSIDER Time-Bound  What is the deadline for reaching the goal?

 When do I need to take action?

 What can I do today?

INSTANT GRATIFICATION Buying something right away because you want it.

 Getting a Big Mac right after school almost everyday.

 Buying a pair of shoes that you “just have to have.”  Downloading $0.99 songs daily.

Can lead to money issues later on.

DELAYING GRATIFICATION 3 types of SMART Goals  Short Term Goals: Up to three months.

 Intermediate Goals (Medium): 3 months to a year.

 Long-Term Goals: More than a year.

GOALS GUT CHECK What are some things that you “should” do, but you are not fully convinced you need to?

ASK YOURSELF On a scale of 1 (not at all) to 5 (extremely), how important is achieving this goal to me? If you can’t rate the goal at least a 3, is it really a goal you need to set?

WRITE YOUR GOALS DOWN!!!

Keep a list of your goals where you will see it often.

Self check yourself to see if you are attaining those goals.

Mr. Speshock’s Examples: Josh’s Braces New Roof What are some upcoming non-excitable goals you have had to plan for or might have to plan for?

SETTING A SMART GOAL Goal: I want to have all of my homework done for my next Monday’s Psychology class.

While this is a good goal, it is not a SMART goal because it is not specific (what exactly needs to be done), measurable (how do I know if I am on track), or time-bound (deadlines).

SETTING A SMART GOAL SMART Goal: I want to have my assignments that are due for my Monday Psychology class completed by Saturday. I will need to read and take notes on at least 10 pages a night. I will need to have a rough draft of my paper written by Thursday so that I can proof read it and edit it on Friday and write the final copy on Saturday.

SMART GOAL CHECKLIST  Is your goal specific?

 Is your goal measureable?

 Is your goal attainable?

 Is your goal relevant to you?

 Is your goal time-bound?

On your hand-out, think of a short term goal you would like to achieve. Create a SMART goal for your short term goal.

Use the SMART goal checklist to make sure your goal is a SMART goal.
