Things We Can Learn From Noah &
The Flood
Gen 6:5-8- And God saw that the wickedness of man was
great in the earth, and that every imagination of the
thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And it
repented the Lord that he had made man on the earth,
and it grieved him at his heart. And the Lord said, I will
destroy man whom I have created from the face of the
earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and
the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made
them. But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord.
Noah & The Flood
• This event should never be diminished in our
minds as just a simple children’s story.
• There are many lesson we can learn.
• Consider a few:
• GOD CAN BE GRIEVED: The flood came about
because God regretted making man (6:6) and He
was grieved in His heart. God is not an
impersonal Being. He can be touched by our
obedience and by our disobedience. I truly
pained God to see what man had become.
Do You Cause God Grief Or Joy?
• Do you make God cry or make him smile?
• Do you make your heavenly Father proud?
• We all want acceptance from our peers, but
do we really think about what impression we
are making on God.
• What attitude would He have about mankind
today?
• How long will He delay His vengeance? No one
knows! It may be today.
Noah & The Flood
• NOAH’S FAITH MOVED HIM TO OBEY GOD.
• Heb. 11: “By faith Noah, being divinely warned of things
not yet seen, moved with godly fear, prepared an ark for
the saving of his household, by which he condemned the
world and became heir of the righteousness which is
according to faith”
• This passage does not say that Noah acted by faith only!
He was moved by godly fear, and he did something and in
doing this he condemned the world and became an heir of
righteousness (according to faith). Note that true faith
involves action.
• God called on Noah to show tremendous faith. It had not
yet rained on the earth. God promised that a flood would
destroy every living thing and Noah paid attention and was
moved by godly fear.
The Ark
 Gopher wood
 Rooms inside
 Pitched within and
without with tar
 One window for light
 One door
 Lower, second, and
third decks
Noah & The Flood
• By faith Noah made the ark according to God’s
exact specifications. He did not “wing it” or
do it like he thought it should be done!
• He made it God’s way- exactly (Gen. 6:14- 16).
• He did it according to God’s pattern (one
window, one door, three stories and out of
gopher wood.
• Gen. 6:22; 7:5- Noah “did according to ALL the
Lord commanded him.”
Noah & Our Salvation
• 1 Peter 3:20- 22- who formerly were disobedient,
when once the Divine longsuffering waited* in the
days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in
which a few, that is, eight souls, were saved through
water. 21 There is also an antitype which now saves
us — baptism(not the removal of the filth of the
flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward
God), through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 22
who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand
of God, angels and authorities and powers having
been made subject to Him.
Noah & Our Salvation
• 2 Peter 2:5; 3:3-6- And spared not the old world, but saved
Noah the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness,
bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly;
• 2 Peter 3:3-6-Knowing this first, that there shall come in
the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, And
saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the
fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from
the beginning of the creation. For this they willingly are
ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of
old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the
water: Whereby the world that then was, being
overflowed with water, perished:
• We do not know when the Lord will return- must be
ready- HE IS COMING BACK! Noah was careful to save His
life and soul- ARE YOU AS CAREFUL ABOUT SAVING YOUR
SOUL
Noah & Grace
• GRACE DOES NOT NEGATE WORKS.
• Many believe that salvation by grace means no works are
necessary. Some even say that just one work on the part of
man negates God’s grace!
• Salvation by grace means that God has given us a gift that we
are incapable of earning on our own merits (Eph. 2:8-9; Titus
3:5-7)
• Eph 2:8-9- For by grace you have been saved through faith,
and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works,
lest anyone should boast.
• Titus 3:5-7-not by works of righteousness which we have
done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the
washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit,
whom He poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ
our Savior, that having been justified by His grace we should
become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
What Is Salvation By Grace?
• Gen. 6:8- Noah was saved by grace but he had to do
what God told him to be saved.
• God through His grace, WARNED NOAH of the coming
flood and told him how to escape it. Noah’s
deliverance came as a result of God’s grace but Noah
still had to build the ark and preach to the lost.
• God warns us (through His grace). He tells us of
coming judgment and how to escape eternal
damnation. It is up to us to meet the conditions set
forth in the gospel Heb. 5:9- And having been
perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation
to all who obey Him.
• We are saved by grace when we accept God’s gift of
salvation and obey the terms He gives us to receive it.
Noah & Judgment
• JUDGMENT IS COMING. Some falsely believed that a God of
love would never punish men with eternal destruction.
According to Peter in 2 Pet. 3:6-7, 9; the flood is our assurance
that God will one day destroy the earth with fire.
• God was patient with those of Noah’s day, yet the flood
eventually came.
• God is patient with the wicked today but His divine patience will
one day reach its’ limit and destruction will surely come (2 Pet.
3:9-11-The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some
men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not
willing that any should perish, but that all should come to
repentance. But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the
night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great
noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth
also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. Seeing
then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of
persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness,
Noah & Living Godly
• IT IS POSSIBLE TO LIVE GODLY IN A WICKED WORLD.
• We live in a wicked world. We are to be in it but do not have to be
of it (Jn 17:14-16).
• Moral standards are tanking as we speak.
• Good is called evil and evil good.
• Children are not safe. How can we be expected to live godly in
such a world?
• Consider living in Noah’s day? Gen. 6:5- the thoughts of man were
only evil continually. In spite of this Noah managed to be faithful
to God and raise a godly family. God was aware of his efforts.
• He is aware of our efforts also. We can live godly in a wicked
world. When God brings you through the storm do not forget to
stop and thank Him. Also take the time to view the rainbow (God’s
promise that He will not destroy the world with water again)- but
He will come again- ARE YOU READY FOR THE JUDGMENT DAY?
Noah & Us
• The events of Noah’s life and the flood were
written for our learning to bring us unto Christ
(Rom. 15:4).
• Despite the modernists attempts to try to make
this event a myth- God’s word rings true and the
events of Noah and the Flood encourage us and
urge us on to more faithfulness and assurance
that if we are faithful unto death we too shall
receive salvation.
• Are you finding grace in the eyes of the Lord?
• Have you followed His pattern for salvation?
