“Good leaders make people feel that they're at the very heart
of things, not at the periphery. Everyone feels that he or she
makes a difference to the success of the organization. When
that happens people feel centered and that gives their work
meaning.” -Warren Bennis
...the ability to influence
“…If you think you are leading and no one is
following, then you are only taking a walk.”
-Leadership Proverb

Character
Contributions
Communication
…The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.
Commitment
Four Types of People:
1. Cop-outs: People who have not goals and do
not commit.
2. Hold-outs: People who don’t know if they
can reach their goals, so they are afraid to
commit.
3. Drop-outs: People who start toward a goal,
but quit when the going gets tough.
4. All-outs: People who set goals, commit to
them, and pay the price to reach them.

“One person seeking glory doesn’t accomplish much.
Success is the result of people pulling together to meet
common goals”.
-John Maxwell
Communication
• Communicate to build understanding,
support and acceptance.
• Board chemistry enhances personal
connections.
• Conflict management that reduces tension
rapidly.
• Community that makes the “journey” fun.
Character
• More than talk
• Talent is a gift, Character is a choice
• Character brings lasting success with
people
• Leaders cannot rise above the
limitations of their character.
Cooperation
• WISHBONES- spend their time wishing
someone would do the work.
• JAWBONES- who do all the talking, but very
little else.
• KNUCKLESBONES- who knock everything
anyone ever tries to do, and
• BACKBONES- who get under the load and do
the work.

Leadership Principles for Board
Members
As a member of this Board I will:
Represent the interest of all people served by
this organization.
Not use the organization or my service on this
Board for my own personal advantage or for the
individual advantage of my friends or
supporters.
Keep confidential information confidential.
Leadership Principles for Board
Members
Approach all Board issues with an open mind,
prepared to make the best decision for the
whole organization.
Do nothing to violate the trust of those who
elected me to the Board or those we serve.
Focus my efforts on the mission of the
organization and not on my personal goals.
Never exercise authority as a Board member
except when acting in a meeting with the full
Board or as I am delegated by the Board.
Lord, Thou Knowest
I have been elected to the Board of Directors
of the National Coalition of Black Meeting Planners.
Keep me from becoming talkative and possessed with the idea that I must
express myself on every subject.
Release me from the craving of getting involved with everyone’s affairs.
Keep my mind free from the recital of endless detail.
Give me wings to get to the point.
Seal my lips when I am inclined to tell about my complaints.
My love to talk about them
has grown sweeter as they are oft-repeated.
Teach me the glorious lesson that (occasionally)
I may be wrong.
Make me thoughtful, not nosy: helpful, not bossy.
With my vast store of wisdom and experience,
it does not seem a pity not to use it all.
But, thou knowest Lord, that I want a few friends,
When my term expires.

Thank You!
“…Who would ever doubt that a small group of
thoughtful and committed individuals could
change the world, indeed that is the only thing
that ever has.”
