“Good leaders make people feel that they're at the very heart
of things, not at the periphery. Everyone feels that he or she
makes a difference to the success of the organization. When
that happens people feel centered and that gives their work
meaning.” -Warren Bennis

Principles of Board Members
It Takes a Team
 T.E.A.M.-Together Everyone Achieves More
 The test of the Board members is taking the
vision from “me” to “we”
 The Law of “Team Together-Team Apart”

Setting the Vision



An organization’s vision is its description of
its desired future.
The vision defines the boards destination,
helps the board set direction and is the
foundation for board actions and decision
making
The clearer the vision, the easier it is for
the people to create the mental image that
the board is striving to achieve.
Setting Strategic Direction
A board sets out on a mission to
transform the current reality into a
desired future.
 The board mission is the reason the
organization exists.
 Goals define the board’s strategy for
achieving the mission.

Approve the Budget

A budget is simply a forecast of
expected revenues and expenditures
for a stated period of time, usually a
year.
Focus on Results
The board’s eyes should always be
looking beyond the present to the
future.
 The board should set clear
expectations for performance and
results.



“…You don’t have to know how to drive the train, but you do
need to assess whether or not it is on the track you intended
and headed for the agreed upon destination.”
Advocating for the Membership
Effective governance requires that
board members keep their members’
needs as their high priority
 Boards primary focus must be toward
the membership and how the
organization’s mission and vision
serves their needs.

Communicate Effectively
The board speaks as a corporate
body.
 The Chairman is the official
spokesperson of NCBMP. In his
absence, the President is the official
spokesperson.

Commitment
Four Types of People:
1.
2.
3.
4.
Cop-outs: People who have not goals and do
not commit.
Hold-outs: People who don’t know if they can
reach their goals, so they are afraid to commit.
Drop-outs: People who start toward a goal,
but quit when the going gets tough.
All-outs: People who set goals, commit to
them, and pay the price to reach them.

Gifts and talents
 Influence
 Creditability
 Knowledge and experience
 Creativity and innovation
 Competence
 Courage

“One person seeking glory doesn’t accomplish much.
Success is the result of people pulling together to
meet common goals”.
-John Maxwell
Communication
Communicate to build
understanding, support and
acceptance.
 Board chemistry enhances
personal connections.
 Conflict management that
reduces tension rapidly.
 Community that makes the
“journey” fun.

Character
 More
than talk
 Talent is a gift, Character is a
choice
 Character brings lasting
success with people
 Leaders cannot rise above the
limitations of their character.
Cooperation




WISHBONES- spend their time wishing
someone would do the work.
JAWBONES- who do all the talking, but
very little else.
KNUCKLESBONES- who knock everything
anyone ever tries to do, and
BACKBONES- who get under the load and
do the work.
