Zonta International (ZI) Advocacy
Definition
Advocacy is the expression of support for or
opposition to a cause, argument or proposal.
Advocacy may include influencing laws, legislation
or attitudes.
Zonta advocacy is an action taken in “the public
interest” or for “the greater good” with respect to
advancing the status of women & girls & their
human rights.

1.ZI, districts, & clubs (We) are urged to express
about & become involved in issues which:
• Improve the legal, political, economic, educational,
health & professional status of women
• Promote justice & universal respect for human
rights & fundamental freedoms
2.We are encouraged to support proposed
legislation that advances the Objects & Resolutions
of ZI, such as the Convention on the Elimination of All
Forms of Discrimination against Women & the
Millennium Development Goals & updates

3. We may identify and cooperate with like-minded
organizations or individuals
4. When hosting or sponsoring educational activities,
present a well-balanced presentation of facts &
viewpoints
5. We shall not advocate / endorse a political candidate
or party, or any religion
 We may endorse individuals for non-partisan
positions
6. Only Board may express opinions on behalf of ZI

7. Clubs may express their opinion on issues only as
clubs, Districts only as districts
8. We may register protests concerning violations of
human rights with the ZI UN Committee
9. We shall not otherwise express positions involving
another country, except with prior approval of ZI
President
• Individuals may express personal views, but must
never attribute them to Zonta

1.Human Trafficking (HT)
Club has taken a leadership role in the Space Coast
Rescue and Restore Coalition (SCRRC) w/Zontian on
the Board + additional attendees
Held 1-day Training for law enforcement, 1st
responders & stakeholders
• 75 attendees, incl. a State Representative
• Trainers included FCAHT; FBI Special Agent,
SCRRC
2nd training: St. Petersburg College FL Regional
Community Policing Institute

1.Human Trafficking (HT)
County Commissioners adopted resolution in support
of "all efforts to eradicate human trafficking" at the
request of Zonta and the SCRRC
Attended Human Trafficking Awareness Day in
Orlando to learn and share best practices
Newest Zontian is an attorney who will leading
activities to involve attorneys in services for victims
and training
• Will provided certified continuing education credits
for attendees

•Suggestions for actions & advocacy
Clubs must prepare for November 25, 2013 &
the subsequent “16 Days of Activism”

All clubs will take part in one common action,
all members requested to wear orange
•UN chose orange to draw attention to VAW
•Ribbons will be available through ZI Store
Clubs are asked to visualize the reported
number of victims of VAW in their community
& stage a public / media event

On November 25, 2013 ZI will start taking
part in “16 Days of Activism” – along with the
UN international campaign
•Online pledge on ZI’s website & an online
discussion dealing with VAW

Part One
1. ZI is already working on VAW with ZISVAW
projects, and has great stories about successes
and ongoing efforts
• Inform your club about these
• Involve a member who is particularly interested
to help prepare a report or a presentation using
ZI resources:

2. Ask your District Chair of UN, or Advocacy &
Service to assist you, invite them to a meeting
3. Every story, every activity will be recognized, tell
your story at www.zonta.org or
www.facebook.com/ZontaInternational
4. If you do not have a club activities on VAW,
schedule a meeting to concentrate on the topic
• Work with your club service & advocacy chair
• ID who is working on VAW in your community
 Tell them about Zonta’s activities – maybe
they’re interested in working with us
 Invite them to the meeting

5. If you do not have a fundraising purpose take VAW
• Try to find strong partners within your community
6. Find out how many victims of VAW are registered in
your community and who is working on that issue
• Let them inform you on a regular basis
7. Contact other Zonta clubs within your Area/District
to compare results, coordinate actions
• Concentrate an Area meeting on VAW
• Contact supporters in your community & get other
organizations to join as well

8. Enter your project for consideration in the newly
created Zonta Service Recognition Award, category
VAW
• Submitting only takes 10 minutes & opens the
chance to be awarded a prize & to be recognized
at the 2014 Convention
9. Find out more about 2012-2014 ZISVAW projects
on the ZI website. Share with your club &
community
10. Support ZISVAW by donating at www.zonta.org.
11. Make sure every Zontian in your club has an
orange ribbon to wear

 Get ready for November 25th, 2013
12. Prepare for a public/media event where the # of
victims in your community will be visualized.

www.zonta.org
13. Connect with Clubs & organizations in your
community working on VAW; tell them about your
activities, ZI activities!
14. Contact media at least 3-5 weeks before your
event, explain your club & ZI VAS activities. Ask
they be prepared for reporting on November 25.

• There will be an online pledge offered on ZI’s

• Clubs are also invited take local actions within
that “16 Days” in addition to the common action
