Grading
MVCC Grading System
Letter Grades of A, B, C, D, or F are
assigned on the MVCC transcript.
(1st Semester CH141 = Marking Periods 1, 2, 3)
(2nd Semester CH142 = Marking Periods 4, 5, 6)
High School Grades
All grades for the CHS Report Card are
assigned using a curve.
For Marking Periods 1, 2, 4, & 5 only 
1. Chapter Quizzes – 60%
2. Major Exam(s) –

(lowest 2 scores are dropped)

Three Major Exams – 25%
(lowest score is dropped)

NO MAKE-UPS for CHAPTER QUIZZES
* Absent = zero (Unless there are extenuating circumstances)
* You may take the quiz a day early in an extenuating situation
* You may drop 2 quiz scores per semester

MAJOR EXAMS (Cover 3 - 4 Chapters of Material)
* Be here – There are only 3 per semester (The lowest score is dropped)
* Make-Up Exams (for extenuating problems only) will be longer & more difficult

LAB
* Scheduling make-up time is sometimes difficult.
5.
MISSING CLASSES
* Will have a negative impact on your grades because you are
missing quizzes and assignments.
* Whether or not these can be made up depends upon the type of
quiz/assignment.
* Typically, the lowest homework assignment and homework quiz are dropped
each marking period.
Lab Requirements
1. Students must PASS lab to earn course
credit.
2. Students must record the DATA for each
experiment in the LAB NOTEBOOK
provided.
3. LAB REPORTS are due within 1 week.
4. The Typed LAB REPORTS must include:
Cover Page, Purpose, Lab Handout, Data,
Calculations, Discussion & Results
Teacher Availability
 You are in good hands!
 Seek extra help often if needed/or if you just want
a quiet place to work.
 Periods 4 and 7 by appointment.
 Most days 10th Period.
 Assign yourself extra help if you score below a
grade of “C” on any Chapter Quiz or Exam.
Classroom Etiquette: The 4 P’s

Be Prompt – on time, in your seat & ready to work when bell
rings (3 tardies = detention)

Be Prepared – with materials out & HW done
3.
Be Productive – consistent effort bell to bell
4.
Be Polite – listen & make eye contact when others are talking,
respect the opinions of others, work well with different
personalities

U. S. National Chemistry Olympiad
LOOKING FOR A CHALLENGE?
 There are three stages:
1. Local Competitions
2. The National Competition
3. A Study Camp to select 4 U.S. students
for the International Competition.
 ALL high school students are eligible to compete at the
Local Competition in the spring. It’s a multiple choice test.
